ARCAM compared to Krell
I don't think I would assume your Arcam gear won't drive the B&W's just fine. I know B&W's by reputation do their best with gobs and gobs of power driving them, but you may be very happy with the sound out of them with your Arcam. When I fi...
ARCAM compared to Krell
Krell is MUCH more expensive gear than Arcam generally, though there is some overlap between Arcam's high end and Krell's entry level stuff. Arcam gives great sonic/video value for dollar. Only you - through personal auditions - can decide if Krel...
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
Mike, well said. You are right on the money with both of your posts.
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
I think we will have to agree to disagree on this. I hear differences in the subjective sense of pace when substituting many components in and out of my system (or even between my Ikemi and my LP12). This may just be a matter of how much I value P...
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
Jay, my ears tell me differently. Yes, the ultimate source of pace is the source material - no audio gear can put in what the musicians left out. But anything else in the audio chain can kill good PRAT. You are right, poorly matched speakers and p...
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
I greatly appreciate the input. Many have recommended Conrad Johnson, but few have commented specifically on the issue of speed and pace in these preamps. If someone could chime in on that point I would be grateful.
What phono stages for Musical Fidelity 308 int.
I can't make a stronger recommendation than the Dynavector P-75 phono stage. I think it may be my favorite piece of audio equipment. It runs $600 new, around $400 to $450 used, and is breathtakingly good for the money. It is very versatile with re...

Subtlety ? do any American amps do it?
After looking at your system photo, I agree you would likely benefit considerably from trying to do something about your equipment placement. I DON'T think this is the reason you don't like the U.S. amps you have heard, as bad equipment placement ...
Subtlety ? do any American amps do it?
My experience is not as broad as I would like, but I will say as a Yank I have easily preferred the SS U.K. electronics I've heard to the U.S. equivalents, which as you point out are often much more expensive. Levinson in particular I just don't g...
Moving to separates
Dhoperos gave excellent and generous advice. Now that I've read the thread a little more closely I need to add that the Linn Kolector has an RS232 port, which would give you flexibility for digital connections. (Note to self: next time read thread,...
Moving to separates
In the price range you give you should audition a Linn Kolector preamp and LK 140 power amp. I personally haven't found anything better for the money (especially if you use the Linn Silver interconnects). The two pieces can easily be had for $1300...
Amplifier suggestions
Linn uses (an excellent) switch mode power supply, thus no need for the massively heavy torroidal power supplies you find in most higher end amps. (Dynavector also uses a switch mode power supply in their gear that may be even better than Linn's.)...
Amplifier suggestions
Please do yourself a favor and audition a Linn 5125 if you can. These can be had for under 3k new and well under 2k used, and are incredible for the price. One knocked the daylights out of the similarly priced McCormack DNA multichannel amp that I...
