Sony MDR-SA3000 headphones
http://www.head-fi.org/ is the place you need to go with this question. While you're there check out tuberollers review of high end phones. I think it covers the MDR 10's, as well as the 3000's and the Sennheiser HD 650. The sound of Sennheiser and...
CD players with variable output/volume control
The Linn Genki can do this (around $850 or so used). But you should know that sound from any CDP that has this variable output function built in isn't as good this way as it will be when the signal is run through a decent preamp.
Arcam FMJ CD33 vs Cary 306/200
I second the suggestion of a used Ikemi. I have heard the FMJ CD33 and like it very much at its price point. But for my ears at least, the Ikemi is in a different league entirely. I will say the Ikemi is significantly more laid back than the Arcam...
Phono stage upgrade
Dynavector P75 is my strong recommendation. It can be had new for $600, or used for around $450. You do have to set jumpers, but if that doesn't bother you, this is an absolutely amazing phono stage and is very flexible, working with a wide variet...
What's the best CD and/or multiplayer today
The Esoteric is very good, and built to withstand a laser guided bomb hit. But I must say that personally, I second the vote for the Linn Unidisk 1.1. You should hear the two of course, as their sound is quite different and there is no telling whi...
Can I put receiver and CD player on top of my sub?
"A CD player is more problematic, but they all contain extensive error correction circuitry anyway."IMHO, a CD player on a sub is ENORMOUSLY problematic. Error correction or not, the sound of a CD player is degraded terribly by vibrations (though ...
Linn Sondek LP-12 happy/un-happy owners
Thomasheisig:Of course no apology necessary - I can't agrue with a man's ears. I'm glad you found a table that pleases you. May I ask where you were able to audition 12-15 LP-12's and compare them within the same stores to a variety of other high ...
Linn Sondek LP-12 happy/un-happy owners
Re: the www.high-endaudio.com/rc-table link. This blogger has no shortage of opinions and self certainty, but I wouldn't buy a brand of klenex based on what he says, much less audio equipment. For me his bluster is annoying, but more to the point,...
headphone help
Cardas, cardas, cardas - perhaps now I won't misspell it again.
About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone
Tobias, thank you. You express some of my deepest feelings about Pat and what he has done for all of us with this thread.
headphone help
Try http://www.head-fi.org - you will get better advice on headphones and associated gear there. It is unquestionably the reference headphone site. With your price range you have many, many options. That said, personally I'd start with the Sennhei...
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
Kek23 -I can't believe I did it, but I got distracted trying to multitask and posted when I thought I was emailing. Embarrassing. To any SLP 98 owner, does this preamp have a headphone out? I know the 2002 does.
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
Thanks for your response! I am happy to hear the Cary did for you what the Magnum 99 did not. What is the rest of your system? I would love to get together sometime and hear your SLP 98. The fact that it is line stage only is just fine, as I stron...
ARCAM compared to Krell
I am not the best source for information on heavy, high-powered amps, but based on my experience you might want to look into Sim Audio for more warmth. McCormack isn't bad either. But there are many others here who know much more on this subject.F...
ARCAM compared to Krell
Okay, I'm convinced - you need probably could use the heavy iron. Krell is not the only option in high-powered, quality amps, though I'm sure it is a good one.
