Starting a Classical Vinyl Music Collection Mahler123, FWIW (probably not much), I've followed your posts on this thread and must tell you that my reasons for getting out of vinyl pretty much mirror yours, and your advise on LP acquisitions is spot on! Good advice yet you keep your posts po...
Cary vs Raven FWIW, as I recall Raven uses 6l6GC power tubes in their amps. This should produce a clear and linear sound which can sound excellent when used with neutral to warm toned speakers (I like and use that tube a lot) much as a 6550 or KT88. No so much...
What affects front to back depth in room/ system? It's probably already been said, but FWIW real 'depth of image' is captured in the recording process. If it ain't there it ain't going to be anywhere. In a carefully set up two channel system all you get is what is on the recording. There are man...
Your greatest high end audio purchase!!! I have two and I can't decide which was/is more influential. The first, which I no longer have but it lasted for over 30 years, was an Audio Research SP 10II back in the days when vinyl ruled. The second is my Silverline Bolero speakers acquired o...
Rachmaninoff's 1st Piano Sonata, original version - His Best? Mahler 123, Nice analysis. Valid, too I think. Your views probably reflect those of the folks who did the edits. Yet, I will probably listen to this more than the edited versions. Perhaps it is as much the sound and performance as anything. :-)
Rachmaninoff's 1st Piano Sonata, original version - His Best? Yes. IMHO it's worth getting to know. It is really a bit different from his other music for solo piano. Reminds me a little of Liszt. I'd have to admit though that before I heard the 'original version' I didn't like it so much. OK, but so is a lot...
High quality recordings any genre Here is a trifecta. Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring Suite, and his 3rd Symphony. Apart from excellent performances, the acoustics are superb. Hell I'd buy this even if I didn't like Copland all that much. The Fanfare coul...
How good is good enough? My 'good enuf' was when I had to accept the fact (OCD or not) that I had probably optimized the only room I had which would accomodate my audio habits. Since I designed my house I felt I was stuck with it, and I am. But I'm happy. :-)
My favorite classical recordings I put my recordings of HIP music into the closet with my hair shirts. I must admit that I’ve never liked the overscored, over produced, recordings of orchestral music. I welcomed Harnoncourt’s Beethoven, Berglund’s Sibelius, Mackerras’ Schubert a...
when your hearing is not as good as it was . . . FWIW, it ain’t the same kind of sound as you’d get in a high quality 2 speaker system properly set up, but a good set of headphones, amp, and source can go a long way in getting you a sound were you can hear those HF’s you are losing. Other than ...
When to choice XLR over RCA ICs. If you can hear the difference with cables that short, you have 'dog's ears. :-) If your system is 'balanced' and a you're a tad anal XLR cables would put your mind at ease. They won't make it worse.
Anyone Here Ever Purchased A Tube Tester? I’ve been into tubes for nearly 35 years and never felt the need. Sputter, as you described it occurs frequently and I believe caused by pin/socket connections, not bad tubes. I check my tubes and just wiggle the tubes a bit and it usually goes aw...
Mahler 8th Symphony RV, for the most part we agree I think. I cut my teeth on Mahler with Levine's 7th. I still prefer it but there are several versions out now that are pretty good. I do like MMT's version with the SFO. FWIW I attended a different performance of it ...
Mahler 8th Symphony You describe the 8th quite well I think. You could have convinced me that Part I and Part II were composed as separate symphonies:-) FWIW, and I’ll admit that its not much as I haven’t explored it much, if at all, subsequent to my discovering Sol...
Most recent speaker you audited in room and returned? Why did you return it? None! But then I don't buy speakers just hoping they will just happen to sound good. If my research suggests (absent an actual in home audition) that the speakers have the characteristics that are important to me in the first place, which are supp... |
