Shorting the speaker wires
I thought the Monsters were locking bananas. Hum........Some DIY thoughts....I've went through most types of connectors, including locking bananas (including the Monsters), non locking bananas of the cheap variety which have the + and - connectors...
kt88 vs. 6550 noobie question
FWIW, whether or not any KT88, or a specific KT88, sounds better than a 6550 depends on the design of the amp (as well as your own sonic preferences). I've used SED KT88's and SED 6550's because I not only like their respective sonic signatures bu...
question about breaking in speakers and amp
Tvad re the Silverlines, mine were completely functional when I first set them up, no 37 hours, or, sorry, 36 hours, needed. But one thing I noticed was that the bass sucked(!) even though one reviewer had waxed poetically about its bass. I bought...
Those simpler times.....
I loved those simple times too. I remember the times I got drunk and would wake up without a hangover.I remember the days when I could eat anything and did. Great food and wine was wasted on me.I remember the dating scene. A little kissing, lots o...
question about breaking in speakers and amp
LOL! Everything breaks in immediately and then runs at full capacity until one day it just dies without warning! Go figure! I guess it's one of those mysteries of electronics that no one understands. I certainly can't tell the difference between b...
kt88 vs. 6550 noobie question
No. Not just plug and play. Bias will have to be adjusted to accomodate 6550's unless your amp has an auto bias curcuit which will compensate for the difference. But, that is not a big deal because even new/different KT88's, when you replace yours...
Help with Spendor S8e . No Bass
It still sounds as if your bass is out of phase with the rest of the FR when wired up correctly. What I mean is that the bass driver in each speaker is wired out of phase with the rest of the drivers in the speaker. I'm not familar with this speak...
Older Cd Players vs. new ones
"....but the old ones are a thousand times more reliable".I bought a Sony 101 in the early 80's. Last I heard (2002) it was still up and running. Couldn't begin to believe how many folks have probably lost their hearing listening to it! :-)Yep, ne...
Considering a change. Avantgarde for Wilson.
Bgordon, FWIW I agree with Undertow re changing out the tubes in the 128. Initially the EH's are impressive (big bass) but I found the tube lacking in bass resolution and the highs a bit too much. I ultimately chose EI6DJ8's, but realize that tube...
tube rolling
I've no personal experience them, but I do recall their reputation being discussed in the tubes forum on AudioAsylum. Can't recall if it was good or bad. You might visit the site and do a search under that name (ditto here).
Help with Spendor S8e . No Bass
I had this happen once to me. Ultimately, by doing close microphone tests, I discovered that there was no sound from the port of one speaker due to a wiring problem in the cross over. The other speaker was fine though. Probably not your issue, but...
tube rolling
Quietness/ruggedness depends on tube screening/selection. Ruggedness has a lot to do with how long they stay quiet in a given application. For example, I have an ARC SP10 which is reknown for being 'tough' on tubes. NOS 6h23EB's selected for low n...
Tubes vs. SS
FWIW, I agree with both Tvad and Mechans. I changed from all SS in 1985 by the introduction of an ARC SP10 pre-amp. Using a Threshold SA3(a VERY nice Class A amp) the overall sound was richer, smoother, and much less fatiguing. I was happy as hell...
tube rolling
FWIW, re 6h23's, a tube maven recently told me that the EH6922 and the new production Russian 6h23 sound alike. I have the current EH6922 and have used it in several different applications, amp, pre-amp and CDP. I have compared it with the NOS 6h2...
fine tuning speaker placement
Size of the woofer shouldn't make a difference - it's the room & location that count. BTW I have a 40 and 50 hz suck out of 6db at 50hz, 5db at 40hz, but I'm flat at 60hz and 32hz and I had to fine tune speaker/chair locations to get it down t...
