Leaving the Naim game . . .
@jafant The TQ Black speaker cable is good.  It sounds better than NACA5 in either the Naim or Exposure system - it's much more "hear-through."  It sounds like it goes deeper at the same time it tidies up the bass, and upper frequencies are notice...
Amps which are Great, but either Unknown or Underpriced
Exposure - not well known in the US, and excellent sounding.
Leaving the Naim game . . .
I've heard nothing but great things about Croft.  Heard one probably 20 years ago in the UK and it was great; just not available in the US at the time.  Glen - I'm not too worried - enjoyed Naim for a long time and would probably still like an oli...
Linn Klout - Playing Loud With Low Impedance Speakers
Larry - The Klout does indeed double from 80 to 160 wpc from 8 to 4 ohms, and per Bill Miller of Linn doubled again to 320 wpc into 2 ohms.  It's also a fully regulated design.  It probably needs to be recapped - it was introduced in 1992, and the...
Leaving the Naim game . . .
All - Thanks for your well-wishes re service.  I deeply appreciate it.  Iraq was hell, Afghanistan was a relative vacation in the desert.  I used a couple of different speakers.  I own Linn Helix 2 speakers with ku-stone composite stands; had them...
Leaving the Naim game . . .
Chayro - The CDS2/52/250/SBLs were long ago - I was using a Nait 3R after that.  I'd be surprised if my Exposure system were as good as the CDS2/52, but it was noticeably better than the 202/HCDR/NAPSC/200 system it replaced, at roughly 35% of the...
RMAF 2016................Boenicke W5
Agree, $3600 is not a "paltry" sum of money.  Most of the systems I listened to were bright, edgy, and forward; whether due to the room, speakers or electronics I couldn't say.
RMAF 2016................Boenicke W5
The two rooms that sounded good to me were the Audio Alternative room with ARC and Vandersteen (complete with Richard Vandersteen out front!),and the Nagra/Avalon room. One of the more fun rooms was Oppo demonstrating the Sonica Grand (IIRC).  Far ...
Linn Klout - Playing Loud With Low Impedance Speakers
Klouts are old enough now that it probably needs to be recapped.  I don't believe Linn can service them any longer; so you might need to do it yourself or dig up someone who can do it (and who has done it before . . .).The Klout doubled from 80 to...
RMAF 2016 "No Schiit?"
I visited the Schiit room briefly.  Didn't know the speakers at all, but thought the system was rather bright and forward.  Was it the speakers?  The amp?  Preamp?  Source?  Who could say?  Whatever was responsible, I was disappointed.
High end vintage vs contemporary DAC's - are sonic improvements real?
raueda1 - The short answer to your question is easy: No.  You will not get better sound from Redbook CDs than what you have now without spending more than $3K.  I use a Meridian 598 DP as transport into the 563, and the combination sounds very goo...
High end vintage vs contemporary DAC's - are sonic improvements real?
Well, I have a Meridian 563 DAC.  It's quite good on Redbook CDs; obviously it won't decode DSD or higher sampling rates.  I've had a chance to compare it to a Naim DAC (the larger case, not the shoebox nDAC), and the much newer and more expensive...
OPPO BDP-103 (NON Darby)
WCC10 - I didn't do balanced because my amplification doesn't support it ( I use Naim; only the $100K Statement preamp has balanced inputs).  I also didn't try any SACDs because I don't have any.  I did break it in per suggestions - I had it plugg...
OPPO BDP-103 (NON Darby)
WCC10 - I finally broke down and tried an Oppo 105 as a CD transport.  I've since returned it.  It sounded OK, but there wasn't much difference between it and an old and cheap Sony DVD player via the digital out.  (The analog out on the Oppo was s...
From Wadia to ???
What about the Wadia 121?  Relatively inexpensive, and still has the character of sound Wadia is known for.
