Which bookshelf speakers to choose: Focal Sopra 1 or B&W 805D3 or KEF Ref 1?
B&W are usually too bright unless you are getting on in years, so it’s not the choice for me (<25). Plus, their dips around the crossover are a no-go for me as well (there is no backing for the “BBC dip”, the LS3/5a has huge off-axis energy...
Best Headphone system under $1000???
JDS Labs Atom as the amp: $100 (almost as good as the THX 789).  Topping D10 as the DAC: $90 (or Schiit Modi 3 for $100).    Leaving $900: Well, at $1000 the HiFiMan Ananda are good, or if you don’t mind used, see what others are selling. The Foca...
Recommendations for improving visceral impact?
Yeah, curve copy, boost 2kHz by 3dB (or to taste), boost 500Hz by like 2dB, boost 250Hz by like 3dB, boost 125Hz by like 4dB, boost 63Hz by like 7dB. Treble is also a little off, drop 4kHz down by like -3dB, 8kHz is sorta where it should be, 16kHz...

@awilderYours has the older version, which has Audyssey Pro; which was basically a more advanced version of the $20 app, but costs $200 for the Pro kit :( and I don’t even know if you can still buy it. My Denon also is too old for Audyssey’s app,...

All speakers should be set to Small if your sub is competent. it seems more like the 1khz to 3khz range tends to be related to what I’m talking about. Audyssey’s default adds a 3dB dip at 2kHz, so that’s likely the issue (it also lowers bass). B...
Differences between cd transports?
@kijanki  Some DACs perform better with Toslink than USB/coax/etc., so a blanket statement about which input is best for a specific DAC can’t be made.
Dac hookup....
Shouldn’t be if your Wi-Fi is stable enough.
DAC measurements explained?
@elizabeth They aren’t guessing though. The data is in packets, if the data is missing/wrong, they have an algorithm to know exactly what the missing data is, as it’s related to the other data in the packet. Again, you can literally drill a smal...
Amplifier Match For Paradigm Signature S8 & C5 V.3
GIK and Acoustimac are two good room treatment companies. Both offer advise on how much you should get and where to place them (but of course they want you to spend more). Or, go to Lowe’s or Home Depot, buy some Roxul Safe N’ Sound, put it in a ...

@geoffkait What would you say to those that rip CDs using their computer’s drive and those using dedicated transports, yet they use the same checking software and database to verify the rips are identical?
Tight bass sub recommendations
+1 for Rythmik. The owner (who has a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering) also has written a good deal on how he achieves great performance: http://www.rythmikaudio.com/technology.html
Amplifier Match For Paradigm Signature S8 & C5 V.3
Based on Stereophile’s measurements, Emotiva’s main fault in their amps is high levels of IMD in the treble. Also going off Stereophile’s measurements, your speakers have a lot of energy in the top octave, so unless you are well past being a seni...

Full Range under $5k-ish
Philharmonic Phil 3.  25Hz at +/-2dB (Also, it states 85dB sensitive, but it’s actually 88dB sensitive from 30Hz and up).
DAC measurements explained?
@elizabeth All modern CD systems have error detection/correction, no real difference between a modern one you buy from Walmart and a $20,000 one in this regard. DACs deal with jitter, they aren’t making up for data error like CD players can.
