short cable length: does cable "quality" matter?
Cable quality matters everywhere. Generally, the longer the cable, the more laid back the midrange. Try the Cable Company's cable "library" where you can borrow different brands to try for a week for a fee and pick the one you like without having ...
Replacing OA2 tubes with Zenier Diodes in Preamp
Mostly cons. Zeners can be very noisy and can tend to dry up the sound when compared to tube references. You may lose that little bit of "give" in the base response. Ditto for replacing the tube regulator with solid state.
Info on H.H. Scott Stereomaster
In addition, don't fire them up unless they're hooked to a load such as a speaker or power resistor.
My digital front end outdoes my analog.....
Your analogue phono is way outdated. A used Sota or VPI with an SME4 or 5 or Graham 1.5 and decent phono cable such as Kimber would be a huge improvement. An active preamp would get you better frequency response. If you continue to use a tube phon...
How is a piano recorded?
The piano recordings that don't sound real usually are miked much too close, often under the lid of the piano. A more realistic sound can be obtained by placing the mikes some distance from the piano and aimed towards the lid.
Lifting speaker cables
I agree lifting any cables makes a huge difference particularly in imaging and smoothness. My experience tells me not to lift cables more than about 1/4" to 1/2" off the ground otherwise you lose body. Also avoid contact with solid materials such ...
Tube Substitution Okay?
Should be fine.
78 Spinnin' - Cartridge?
Grado still makes a 78 cartridge.
speaker cables and IC's
Try the Cable Company's lending library where you can borrow cables to try in your system. www.fatwyre.com is the website.Rodger
AMP comparisons - which of these do you like?
I have a MV55. Great midrange and very musical.
tube question
It's not the designation that's so important as long as you use a 5Y3. It's the brand. Different brands of rectifiers (which the 5Y3 is) sound different from each other and affect the sound just as much as different brands in the audio stages.
Your favorite classical composers/works?
I think one reason classical is not as popular as it used to be (although live concerts continue to sell out) is the drab, emotionless recorded performances? today of even the popular classics not to mention some of the unusual. Where are the Rein...
Tube Question--Slight Ringing coming from one side
I'm not familiar with these amps either but, unless they are integrateds, and the noise varies with volume level, I'd suspect the preamp. If it's the preamp then it would be a tube prior to the volume control. Again, as Newbee suggested, try switch...
Cable Hook-up / Direction needed for Moron
Generally you hook up the cables with the arrows pointed away from the source. Some have suggested trying them both ways to see which is best. I recommend using one channel only and try the cable both ways. Hooked up the incorrect way the soundfiel...
Best way to terminate speaker cables ?
All things being equal, you'll get better dynamics and better frequency extension if you use bare wire.I have found connectors on speaker cable tend to limit dynamics, etc. Also do you crimp or solder? Each introduces its own sonic signature into ...
