VPI's website down
This comment from audioasylum user "Waxxy" over there: I doubt you will see the VPI forum again. It started as a fun place to share our pride & joys and quickly became a repository for all the glitches and problems with VPIs. There was almo...
Suggestion between benchmark Ahb2, Bob carver crimson 275 and rogue atlas magnum 2 amos
@pwoodard922 Awesome! Great choice. That Rogue is a powerhouse; it will hit its rated power (honestly) and gives a good dose of the positives of tube sound without any nasties (sluggish, soft sound, weak bass). Rogue support is also stellar, but...
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
@snapsc From the manual specs section, on power: More than 75 Watts Per Channel, both channels driven at eight ohms, from 20Hz to 20kHz with no more than 1% total harmonic distortion. Distortion decreases at lower levels. Oh my - it spec’d th...
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
@jbhiller 😥 Thanks for that, though. Now we might expect some sort of tug of war over what constitutes acceptable bandwidth at power, THD limits, and measuring setups - and how this should all filter down to single power #. It’s perhaps interes...
''Óriginal parts'', ''identity '' and ''retip'' conundrum
@best-groove  +1, largely incomprehensible, and not just from a language barrier. Raul's English isn't perfect either, but I can tell exactly what his point is.
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
Sure that’s cool, now all Carver has to do is explain how 19 lbs of tube amp from his factory breaks the laws of physics to drive an honest 75 Watts per side 😂 It will definitely involve "magic transformers". I guess they didn't have the magic on...
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
I used to play around with vintage tube amps. Lovely sounding amps, in the range of 20 - 35 Watts. With 90dB speakers, an honest 20 Watts is plenty to drive them quite loud for LOTS of music. It'll even sound very pleasing, too - good to the last ...
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
I agree listening enjoyment is most important to our hobby. I’m no fan of ASR - they put listening dead last. But outright false claims by manufacturers can also damage the hobby. And I don’t see how these particular amps come close to hitting the...
Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier
Carver’s own specs: 19 lbs for a Crimson 275 rated @ 2x 75 Watts?? That’s ridiculously lightweight, for a tube amp. That puts it in the class of a console-pull EL84 amp pushing ~ 15 Watts a side. No amount of Bob Carver "magic tech" talk can make ...
Recommended S.S. amp type for TANNOY 15'' speakers
@whitecap  The C2300 is spec'd at 220 ohms, which is excellent for a tube preamp - so I don't see how that could have any issues driving the Pass amp.  Matching brand & line of pre to power is not necessary. On my Tannoys I've mixed and matc...
Chi-Fi in the Time of Self-Righteous Indignation.
Are most Chinese actually offended by the term "Chi-fi"? Or is this a case of bored whytes being offended on behalf of how they think other people should respond. In any case, there is still a lot of junk and cheap knock-offs being produced in Ch...
Chi-Fi in the Time of Self-Righteous Indignation.
I had been a fan of the "Made in USA" banner, but honestly is "Made in USA" even a hallmark of quality anymore? We can clearly still make stupid good stuff (ARC, VAC) but it seems to me like Germany/Denmark/Switzerland/Japan/? is where the very to...
Replicant 100 stylus
@tomic601  Thanks, and Happy New Year! Haven't heard the Beethoven Ortofon yet. I'm really interested in the new Verismo, which looks like a refined A95 and lists a diamond cantilever - though in product images it looks more like boron than diamon...
Replicant 100 stylus
@kingharold The Cadenza Bronze’s predecessor, Kontrapunkt "c", was also quite excellent. I’ve had both (still have a Bronze). The Kontra used a Fritz Gyger FG80 stylus. Supposedly the FG stylus was discontinued and they switched to Replicant for ...
Rogue Audio Atlas Magnum III Power Amplifier
@couger4u  I've tried the Apollos in triode, they still have plenty of power that way (150 Watts into my 96dB speakers) but the sonics just don't do it for me. I prefer ultralinear every time. The triode mode gains you like 1% worth of a sweeter ...
