Tube Vs. SS Preamps
If you’re not sure whether you want tube or SS sound, check out the 6H30 based preamps. Great tube! Super clean, linear, and resolving. If you want a more traditional "sweet" tube sound, I'd stick to those that use 6922 or 6SN7 in their circuit.
The "great" sound of reel to reel explained
My first good turntable setup, ~ 3K including phono stage, was very enjoyable to me - much more than CD. About a year into that I picked up a Pioneer RT-1020L and a bunch of Maxell UD 35-90 tapes containing some unknown guy’s needledrops (mostly 1...
Preamp recommendations for my system please
Why not a "plain" Ref 6? That can be had for under 10K. Snagging a 6SE at that price point is...optimistic. I’ve moved on from my Ref 6, to a VAC Master, and yet I still admire the 6. It’s really a matter of system matching and personal preference...
VAC and Kevin Hayes are totally unresponsive. What's up with that?
This is not typical for VAC, and in fact I have a friend who’s in regular correspondence with them currently. 1. Email is not the most reliable form of communication. Call them. I sent an email question a couple weeks ago and got no response. No ...
SUT Interconnects
@lewm The "flying leads" makes sense, thanks. But as far as optimizing total run length to a phono 47K input - I always though it was more critical to keep capacitance low AFTER the SUT, rather than BEFORE the SUT, becasue of the after-SUT’s cap...
Ikeda 407 Tone Arms - New or Vintage
@nandric  Wow, that's surprising, and good to know! I've been intermittently curious about the Ikeda arms, but already have a 64S (plus two 64fx's) and love it.
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
I think we can all agree the most important component is to keeps spending gobs of money until all the problems and deficiencies go away...and then spend more to improve it incrementally until you go bankrupt or die! I think it's important to get...
Tonearm Project Consumer Study
Korf Audio just made exactly the hypothetical new high-end tonearm I might want to buy. You can read about it on their blog. Their price is incredibly reasonable. I’m not affilated with them in any way, and haven’t even placed an order yet. Reson...
Auditioning The Fyne 703 Soon
Canterbury GR is the current model, since 2013. SE is the old model, which Jim owned, and which I owned before I bought GR. It does appear now that the move of all Tannoy production over to China (including Legacy and Prestige lines) has been conf...
Auditioning The Fyne 703 Soon
@vinylvalet To be fair, Jim had the Canterbury SE and I believe they retailed for $20K at the time. That SE model would in fact benefit from additional clarity & detail that would presumably be imparted by the Duelund crossover. The current mo...
Preamp Opinion
"But Nick at Rogue recommends the RP-1 over the 99. He said the tubes are improved. " Heh, definitely a difference in opinion. I love Rogue Audio, and have owned several of their components (including 5 preamps: a 99 Magnum, Hera, Hera II, Athena...
Preamp Opinion
I'd consider a Rogue 99 Magnum (or Super Magnum) in the Rogue slot over the RP-1.
about tubes svetlana winged c help
The printing on these tubes may be suspect, but the construction is a bigger factor in determining its make. New Sensor (Electro Harmonix and all the Mullard / Gold Lion / etc reissue labels) bought the Svetlana label circa early 2000s, and beside...
Adding a Herron VTSP 3A/360 Preamplifier to the system.
I'd looked at both the 360 and the Herron monoblocks in the recent past, but went in different (and much more expensive) directions. My ears have recently been opened up to Tannoys on Solid State amps (Phison - who I'd never heard of before this y...
A Record Collection/Moral Conundrum - What Would You Do?
@lewm Why not gift your vinyl collection to a younger audiophile, (or partition out to a few 'philes) if you know & like any? Seems like a well curated collection would have a long road to being properly enjoyed again, through a charitable don...
