why a 75 dollar blue ray smokes all 2k CD players and any turntable???
As Mr. Schroeder indicated: " There will always be Chintziphiles". I know I'm in that class as I have never spent more than $1000 on any individual component. My listening space is sonically challanged, I have 20% hearing loss in my right ear and...
I blew up my receiver. Now what?
If it's a receiver you need, in Europe, I would get a Cambridge Audio SR20 or whatever the new series is called. You won't get HDMI inputs, but you will get a competent, multi-voltage receiver for moderate Euros.
Is easy to know when a non english speaker is writting?
I enjoy reading posts, in any forum, from people of other cultures or nationalities. I can often spot syntax and grammer oddities, but it makes for even more interesting reading. I used to teach English as a second language. English is far more ea...
ls FM radio even listenable any more?
Detroit metro area still has some good public radio stations. WDET and WRCJ both broadcast in high quality terrestrial. When I had a decent analog tuner, I would listen on some evenings and weekends. My tuner's gone and I stream the same material....
Analog or Digital and why?
I still occaisionally spin vinyl out of nostalga. I like the liturgy of record cleaning, stylus cleaning, azmuth and overhand adjustments and all that really cool analog tweeking that goes on. But ultimately, I think vinyl is a pain in the ass. In...
High Performance Audio - The End?
To spenav - "Our current gears will be collectors’ items and we all will be old men reminiscing about the past on some forum". You just summed up my current experience, reminiscing on Audiokarma.
Are the loudness wars fake so record companies can destroy the music?
I'm not an engineer, but, wouldn't all recorded music, regardless of analog or digital formats, be compressed to some extent? Even live performances, if electronically amplified, have limiters and frequency equalization. Wouldn't that would be for...
Concrete Audio Speakers...Speaker Enclosures made out of Concrete ?..
I don't know how concrete enclosures sound. I do know that cinder blocks make decent speaker stands. I used some, back in college, for my large Advents. Cheap, minimal resonance and meets a certain post-industrial chic.
Why Crazy Prices paid for Pioneer 100 JBL L100 AR1 AR3 AR3A
The L-100's were okay. I had a pair of L-166 Horizons, which were similar, but had a way better silk dome tweeter. I inherited a pair of AR 4AX's. The surrounds were just barely intact, but still worked. I thought they were pretty good with dome m...
What do/did you do for a living?
I did logistics management and professional recruiting. I thought I was was the pauper in this bunch as my main, 2 channel system investment of about 2K is what I thought most of you would spend on a power cord. I am not disparaging any of you, I ...
You know you are an Audiophile when:
You not only want to see the back of the unit, you Google it to find an image of it with the case removed.
...do great speakers increase in value over time in the vintage market?
I agree with chrshanl37. When inflation is factored in, there is generally no appreciation. I had a pair of JBL L-166 that I had to sell during a divorce (still sad about that). They generally retailed for about $800 a pair in 1979/80. I bought mi...
$1000 bookshelf speakers with "recessed", "laid back" or "flat" mid-range?
I recently bought some Revel Concerto2 M16's to replace some forward sounding Paradigm's. Wonderful, speakers. Retails for $900.
Don't like vinyl
I almost gave up on vinyl until I sold my entry level manual deck for a vintage automatic Technics TT. Now I only stream music 93% of time instead of 99% of the time.
Two Turntables? Why
I replaced a modified Project manual turntable with a Technics automatic from the early 80's. I really enjoy the auto shut off, but miss the more exacting sound of the Project. I may add a decent quality manual in the future for serious listening,...
