How old is too old?
I am using a 43 year old turntable that I managed to do maintenance on and am not a former tech. It's speed is right on. I am using a 25 year old CD player, purchased used, and only needed to clean the laser pickup. Since I stream music about 90% ...
Why so many B & W Speakers on the used market?
I think there's 2 reasons for amount of used B&W's on the market: 1. They have been around for 60 years and have always had a pretty broad range of speaker choices, across many price points. They have also developed a wide range of retailers ...
A Low Cost Pleasant Sounding Used CD Player?
I have had good results from NAD CD players from the early 2000's like the the CD 521 BEE or even the earlier CD 520. They sound good via their native DAC's or as transports. Unfortunately, prone to failures and burnt out displays. Also Rotel's fr...
How competitive are you with your system?
My system is always in competition with my budget. That being said, I like my current system fine even knowing that it cost less than what most AG members paid for their speaker cables.
Outlet is "Open Ground" - Is There Still a Safe Way to Connect to My Audio Gear?
I have had to replace several duplex outlets over the years. Definitely two wire open ground. There is an addition on the house, built in the 1980's. Those outlets do have the typical green grounding cable, but the breaker box (since replaced and ...
Outlet is "Open Ground" - Is There Still a Safe Way to Connect to My Audio Gear?
Sorry, the metal faceplate of the amplifier.
Outlet is "Open Ground" - Is There Still a Safe Way to Connect to My Audio Gear?
My home was built in 1956 and has two wire open ground outlets in much of the house. This is true in my listening space.  I am a fairly avid follower of posts on AG and realize amps, in general, should be plugged directly into the mains outlet. W...
Phono Stage - The great analog tragedy
The only outboard phono amps I remember from the 70’s and 80’s were MC “step up” transformers. I also found some mainstream equipment with above average phono stages. NAD 3020 (when it worked), Sansui AU 717, Pioneer Spec 1 preamp.
Make speakers disappear. Simple, cheap
I like to turn the light off and watch the sunset happening between my speakers.
White cabinet popularity?
I just painted and vinyl wrapped a pair of older PSB rear surrounds in white from their original black. Not really a style statement but they much better blend with the wall color.
What happened to Yamaha electronics?
My experience with Yamaha electronics is limited to a 1990's mid-range CD player I bought used. The internal DAC was unlistenable. It even sounded bad as a transport using the coax digital out to my external DAC.  Their current Yamaha integrated ...
My Favorite Tweaks, What is yours?
@mdalton I agree that a good sativa makes the music float. My best tweak has been a $48 jitter filter from Amazon. It made a huge improvement streaming from my PC.
??? What Is Your Favorite Speaker Finish ???
Saw some Telefunken stand mounts in the 1980’s done in teak with cool fabric grills. Beautiful.
Ortofon carts are too hot for my phono preamp?
It’s interesting to read that the original poster found Ortofon’s too bright. Through my NAD phono preamp I find Ortofon’s flat and rolled off at the top. Much better synergy with AT’s and Goldring’s. I guess everyone experiences sound differently.
Using external DAC with preamp with built-in DAC
I hooked up my old Arcam DAC to the line in's and did an A/B against the resident DAC in my integrated. The resident DAC in the integrated uses a lower end ESS chip compared to the TI chip in the Arcam, but the Arcam DAC is close to 15 years old. ...
