Benefit of a DAC for a good red book cd player
I would suggest holding off a bit as commercial units are just starting to appear that use the Sabre32 DAC. This DAC, properly implemented, could be a big step up in DAC performance. The Wyred 4 Sound DAC will be out soon. It features optional hi-...
What's a good power cord for conrad-johnson CT5?
Well, I do not have experience with thoses cords or components. However, I would suggest you consider a Kaplan Cable. Very smooth, clean, and clear, with great bass. Not edgy at all, with excellent soundstaging. You should be able to arrange an au...
OPPO 83SE vs Anthem D1 DACS
Bob, I mostly listen to music and not movie soundtracks. Nor do I listen to multi-channel SACD. I appreciate where you're coming from, but I've found many HT preamps are too much of a compromise for me. In general, IMO, a $3K stereo preamp will ty...
Power Strip Question - PLEASE HELP
Jferreir, there are basically two surge control technologies - MOV and non-MOV. You can read up on the methods on the Brickwall or SurgeX web sites. Some claim that MOVs will degrade the sound. MOVs are used in many power control units like those ...
Power Strip Question - PLEASE HELP
Oh, I forgot to add that the Brickwall surge protector is fairly sonically neutral. I did snip off the captive brass power plug and replaced it with a better plug. This resulted in a little bit better sonics.
Power Strip Question - PLEASE HELP
Jferreir, don't sweat it too much. Try a couple of power strips and see if you get too much noise, or not.I'm in a similar situation and use a Brickwall surge protector that feeds two power strips. One power strip is a BPT, and is used for my audi...
Best place in the system for a good PC?
FWIW, I agree with Blindjim's comments. I once had some Zu Boks. They were just ok. However, the Kaplan cables I use are a significant step up. If you're concerned about costs, some companies offer a free trial, and there's always the Cable Compan...
OPPO 83SE vs Anthem D1 DACS
I'd suggest you wait a bit to get more feedback on the performance of the Oppo 83SE. I'm a 2 channel guy, and in general I would suspect that for 2 channel, most DACs in the $500-$1000 range would perform as well, or better than something like the...
Best place in the system for a good PC?
I don't use ABX to evaluate components (including cables). I prefer to change a component, listen to it for several days, up to a week or two, and then switch. Repeat as needed. Some differences may discovered immediately, while others are subtle, ...
Oppo BDP-83SE or Sony SCD-XA5400ES?
Magnumpi205, don't mean to threadjack, but could you elaborate on your views on the Wyred 4 Sound DAC? I'm really interested in this unit (I'm just a 2 CH guy). My current DAC uses a PCM1794.
Power Cables which take the soundstage back
Power cords (plugs and cable) are another variable for me to tweak the sonics of my system. I have tried power conditioning, but did not care for the minor loss in dynamics, and blunting of the transient edges and decay. Now, I run a high quality ...
Best Power Cord for REL Stadium III
Glad to hear you've made some progress. I appreciate you being open minded regarding these tweaks. In general, I've found gold plated plugs have full bass, and roll off or color the highs. Pure copper or brass have full bass, with the pure copper ...
Best Power Cord for REL Stadium III
Just FYI, the plugs I bought don't say Oyaide anywhere on them. The construction of them is slightly different than a genuine Oyaide, so perhaps they might not sound as good as a real Oyaide. Also note there are no UL markings. However, they do so...
Best Power Cord for REL Stadium III
In my experience, a rhodium plug/IEC should lean out the bass a bit. You could replace the plugs on your DIY cord with some of the inexpensive rhodium plugs on E-Bay. I have tried them and they are quite good. Alternatively, you could pick up anot...
What gives? CD’s, Solid State?
I agree with the others here that state you need some tubes in the mix. Some nice warm cables may also help. I run a tube rectified Modwright preamp in my otherwise SS system. It certainly helped to inject some warmth, body, and sweetness (once I ...
