Subwoofer RCA Cable
As usual in audio, @koestner , you have received conflicting replies and will have to rely upon your own good judgement about what to do. It’s probably clear, I don’t think much of the magic by which expensive cables work. I call it "magic" becaus...
Fritz vs CSS vs Ryan
A nice in-home trial and a great reputation.
Dvorak Cello Concerto
If you have a streaming service, you might take a listen to the version by Anne Gastinel. I haven’t listened for a while but remember enjoying it a lot. And "yea" to AW. Gendron doesn’t need my approval.
Fritz vs CSS vs Ryan
If some of your options don’t allow a home audition with a full refund if you don’t like them (perhaps minus shipping or service fees), I would strike those off the list. The speaker is not only a matter of taste, it also interacts with each room ...
Subwoofer RCA Cable
There is no need for a special cable for subs. If anything, they are less demanding than full-range components. Current delivery is not an issue if you are talking about an active (amplified) sub whose input is a line-level signal. They are driven...
Speaker polyamory -- or, stories about getting a second set to alternate with your primary
@artemus_5 - It wasn’t me. I have never been involved with high-performance cars. Indeed, since I moved from North Carolina 12 years ago, I tried to change my user name on Audiogon, but for security reasons, they allow that only by closing the old...
Speaker polyamory -- or, stories about getting a second set to alternate with your primary
I’ve practiced serial monogamy in this respect, but if I had the space, I’d buy another pair of speakers. I am now using Janszen hybrid electrostatics; the second pair would be monitors in the British tradition (Harbeth, Spendor, Stirling, Graham)...
Subwoofers and Crossovers.
If you are looking at DSP solutions, many of them also have digital crossovers for subs and then the extra channels of DAC that that requires. So going that way, you could avoid the considerable cost of the CR-1. Examples are the Anthem STR Pream...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
A prune is not a vegetable. A cabbage is a vegetable.
Moved from medium attic like room to larger room, everything is too bright
Audio companies make a lot of money on audiophiles who don’t address room acoustics, and instead go on endless rounds of gear swapping. You would be amazed what a few bass traps and decorative wall panels can accomplish. The latter can be custom m...
Is it me or new audio gear is too perfect and give ear fatigue?
Many recordings are very bright. A system flat to 20 kHz will (IME) result in fatigue. That will be accentuated by bad room acoustics (slap echo, early reflections). Depending on one’s hearing, one might need to roll off the response to make many...
Billie or Ella? Maria or Renata? Technique or feeling?
As @hilde45 said, one can’t really argue taste. To me, there is a perfection to Ella’s singing that can seem a bit cool emotionally. Her intonation is beyond perfect -- I’ve never heard a singer do what she does, and so smoothly. I love listening...
Supra Cat 8 Ethernet cable
Some thoughts and questions: By what mechanism -- other than noise transfer -- could an Ethernet cable carrying packets make the eventual analog sound be warmer or brighter? Is this measurable? Detectable in a blind test? Persistent over time? W...
Supra Cat 8 Ethernet cable
The main difference is that Cat 8, which is totally unnecessary for home audio, has a shield and metal connectors and potentially will transfer noise through its shielding. Cat 6 and 7 (MORE than enough) do not have that "feature" and will isolate...
Unfinished basement listening room
My room in the basement needed a lot of treatment to sound good. After treatment, it sounds better than any room its size (12.5 x 20 x 7 ft) has a right to. Big bass traps in 4 corners were key, in my case. A little absorption with binary scatter...
