Should I buy a VPI SCOUTMASTER. I OWN 25 RECORDS.
Jeff, unipivots particularly VPI's are garbage. You can read any number of threads about guys having to replace pivots. This type of design is just a cheap easy way to make an arm. You don't have to worry about tolerances or expensive precision be...
Linear tracking turntables, whatever happened?
If you want to know why linear trackers are a bad idea just watch the cantilever closely while playing a record. The cantilever will deflect towards the spindle and eventually the tonearm follows, overshoots a little deflecting the cantilever away...
LP made from a digital master recording...
Nandric, that is a common miss understanding. That is not how DACs work. DACs recreate the analog signal from digital data. If I show you both an analog 100 Hz waveform and one from a DAC they will look exactly the same. There are no on and offs, ...
I need a loudness switch
Tim, I'm all for the subs but since when is Class D the harbinger of good bass? Or good anything for that matter?
sub-woofer/speaker wiring
jc, I am talking about a stereo system. To get the best performance and integration out of subwoofers you have to use a full crossover both low and high pass filters. Trying to do it the way you are is the cheap solution. If that is what you are l...
180 gram vinyl vs First Pressing used
They can be great and they can be awful. There are many small companies that are reliably great like Friday Music and Analog Productions. Then there are companies that are reliably awful like Rycodisc. Back in the old days BCD it broke down in gen...
Importance of phase and timing optimization when incorporating sub woofers ?
Yes Duke but FR, Phase and Time interact. In order to get the frequency response right it helps to get the timing right. I have continuous control over the delays of each speaker and subwoofer and can make adjustments by remote. I can hear exactly...
Speaker recommendations 10 to 30k and no beryllium
smod! There is no dynamic loudspeaker as tough and durable as the Sound Labs. Literally you can not blow them up and they can go VERY loud. They are also harder to hurt physically than dynamics. Your 3 year old can kick them all he wants. He'll br...
Where can I audition amps near Boston?
Hi v7, I live in NH near by. Goodwin's High End in Waltham. You use to have to call for an appointment. Not sure if he still does that. Then there is Fidelis and Sounds of Silence in Nashua, NH right on the Mass border.
sub-woofer/speaker wiring
jcipale, it looks like you are not using a high pass filter on your satellite speakers so you are missing 1/2 the benefit of biamping subwoofers. You need a proper cross over like a dbx drive rack. Cross over at 80 hz and you will add another 6 dB...
Should I buy a VPI SCOUTMASTER. I OWN 25 RECORDS.
Jeff, that is a personal decision you have to make for yourself. Too much money and effort involved so you really have to love it. I certainly would not get a VPI unless you can get it without a tonearm. Get a tonearm  with a good gimbal bearing. ...
A philosophical question.
millercarbon, you are going to have to come over for dinner. We make osso buco/ lamb shank stew but sous vide the meat and add it and it's juice at the end. The stew is cooked with stew lamb and bones in the oven. Killer dish:)My problem is I get ...
LP made from a digital master recording...
Yes, the euphoric qualities of vinyl still pervade the experience. Depending on the recording sometimes it is better sometimes not. Vinyl is always noisier so on very quiet recordings digital has an advantage. Older analog recordings, anything bef...
In-ceiling: Am I wasting my money?
You would be better off looking for places to hide Sonos speakers. Those can be equalized and are great for background music. The 1's are very small.
Audiophile Bass?
Exactly wolf, the best subs are invisible until a low C organ note comes along. Not loud but your vision blurs.
