Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
I find it amusing when tube guys bang on about how much "fun" they have stuffing around checking tube hours and rolling tubes to get better performance. Audiophiles who buy SS amps which offer similarly rich, holographic sound as the best tube gea...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Goodness Mulveling, you weren't the only one to pile on the S5's. That was a group punch on! Moving forward, i'm pleased you gave this series a second chance. As I said in an earlier post "I am not sure which amps you heard those S5's with? howeve...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
I have owned two tube cd players including my previous modded Ayon CD-5s which I used as linestage paired with a Boulder 1060. I also rolled the factory tubes with NOS mil-spec tubes. Tubes certainly provide midrange lushness, sound holographic &a...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Another point to add is, whilst the S5 is transparent sounding. It is also a bit forgiving (certainly more so than the Q3) of less than reference sources and recordings which is a plus. If anything, running high end ribbons or ESL's would demand e...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
I think you may have missed my point Kiddman, I was simply saying the S5's are transparent and revealing of upstream equipment, therefore time should be taken auditioning different amps to see what has good synergy to your ears. Obviously most goo...
Romulus CD player--
I own a Romulus cdp & agree with Rtilden's comments. The Aesthetix has a very natural, unforced sound. There is a touch of warmth and sweetness. Imagining is very good and there is a texture and body which is quite analogue-like. I'm using Jor...
Best Amp for Timbre, Depth and Spatial Resolution?
For that kind of money i'd look for a 2nd hand Modwright KWI-200 & put the spare change into some Stillpoints Ultra SS or Wave Kinetics A10-U8 feet.
The best CD Player for the money
I have been living with an Aesthetix Romulus valve cd player for a while now & have to say i'm blown away by how good this player sounds at the price. I haven't heard other players with big claims at this price point (eg: EAR Acute 3), but th ...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Good point Charles about sales volumes. It just gets a bit exasperating when comparison threads get disproportionate commentary purely because one manufacturer has been around longer and gained more supporters. In a sense, now I can understand why...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Charles, If you review this thread, 99% of the comments are about Tannoy. I've noticed audiophiles who find gear which gets them off the merry go round do not post endlessly about their gear on forums. It's only really 'aspirational' audiophiles w...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Charles, I mostly agree with your comments, however in this case it's as pointless as comparing a softball team to a baseball team. In both, you hit a ball but you're talking about two completely different games and teams. I don't doubt AG is choc...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
Charles, I disagree with your synopsis of my comments. I have no problem with comparison threads where there is SOME crossover, some area to argue one way or the other. But this thread is completely pointless. If posting in a void is your thing, b...
Magico S5 vs Tannoy Westminster Royal SE
This is such a pointless thread which predictably became a Tannoy love-in, then derailed into side discussions. These are two completely different speakers. The Tannoy fans will swear black and blue the Westminsters kill the Magico's in every metr...

Phillips no longer producing transports
09-11-13: KnghifiI say good ridden to Philip Transports. All my cd players with Philip drives had problems. Many were very expensive Krells. Sounds fantastic when working but never for long. Now 100% computer audio with music backup on USB drives....
