Do I need preamp?
Clearly yes,If you get an MM or a high output > 2mV Cartridge I highly recommend the Graham Slee Graham Amp 2SE. It is unbelievanly good and affordable. It should not cost you more than $500 new if find a used one obviously much less.
Nordost Frey vs Audience Au24e interconnect
Did you try the Cable Company? They have a lot of cables to try on a loaner basis.I own AU24 with RCAs but not AU24e and the originals are exactly what you want. Detailed and neutral. BTW the cheaper Audience Conductors do a very respectable job.I...
I Haven't Seen These In Years...
You are right. It seems that WAF conformists must try to minimalize the impact of exposed gear thus they use bookshelves or in wall.Or the guys that have the dedicated room who can expend floor space. If there is any compramize perhaps it can be s...
List of tube integrateds with headphone out
The Fisher Receiver I am using sounds good to me. I believe the preamp circuit is used to amplify the headphone jack. The tubes are usually NOS German. However if you want a super headphone amp I will admit that my modern but now disgraced SinglePo...
Tube Monoblocks for heavy music on Khorns
You have nailed it! Any good tube amp with 4 tubes per channel rated at 60-80 wpc into 8 Ohms would prolly suffice. I have used a small older McIntosh SS stereo power amp with great success with 50wpc. he Macs and Klipsch synergize well. I am othe...
List of tube integrateds with headphone out
All of the "golden age" tubed integrateds circa 1955-1965. When refurbished these can perform incredibly well. The issue for you may be the output power. You might want to specify which speakers and headphones you want to drive.
Music Hall CD 35.2 -- comments?
With a name like yours Reb, I would expect you to teach us.
Most Beneficial Cable Upgrade
Preamp to amp interconnect, then Speaker cables in my system. I have good PCs but didn't notice a meaningful difference beyond not using the $1 stock cords especially after dedicated circuit.
Tube Preamp suggestion for the uninitiated
My constant answer the amazing AES AE-3 for much less than your budget but hard to find on the market. Only one dealer has any new ones left and it is heavily laden with expensive upgrades including a special paint job from Upscale audio, virtuall...
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
Stan All due respect but I had used a test tone CD which did show that they produces a low note at 28 Hz. Below that the tones made the woofers wobble in a frightening long excursion but made little sound. I will check again but these are the 936 ...
Go for sub or larger speakers?
I see that the thread has run in the direction of sub integration. I found that this was actually difficult for all the caveats which appear as aside or minor conditions to be aware of. You must count the following; room difficulties, with no abso...
Which amps to use with a pair of Focal 918
I own Focal Electra 936s which are much much larger but share some of the same sonics. I emphatically agree that a tube amp really brings out the best in them. I used all manner of SS including ARC, Musical fidelity, etc. and was astonished by the...
Flat Screen Recommendations: 50 to 60 inch
As far as I can tell the rules don't prohibit the mention of a place to source gear even if they are not Audiogon members or partners etc. Most people including myself usually post that they have no financial interest in the store mentioned.
Coincident Dragon Amplifier
I strongly recommend that you give a less expensive pair of monoblocs which run 6CA7 EH fat bottles two pairs in parallel PP per bloc yielding 75-78 wpc. The supplied 6922 should be rolled but the NOS 5687 input tube is fine. The amps I use and th...
Maggies with Tubes?
The honest no nonsense answer is absolutely no way and running two pairs in parallel is impossible off that amp. I am a tube guy but honestly you need power with lots of current. A high current SS amp would do the trick I would avoid dissapointmen...
