Ayre C 5xe Universal vs. Cary 306 SACD
Kalan,To further build on your last repsonse I just received the evolution version of the CX-7 which replaced the non evolution unit. There is a noticable jump in improvement especially in the blackness of the background....if the C-5xe betters re...
Best processor that is excellent for 2 Ch music
For your less than $1,500 target you can pick up a used Cal Audio 2500. Outstanding processor and very good pre-amp functionality. I liked it slightly better than the Classe SSP 75 which is another outstanding unit but not one which would fall int...
decent CD/SACD/DVD-A Player for 2 channel Audio on
If your going CD only it will be tough to beat an Arcam FMJ 23 or Arcam FMJ 33, both or which show up here time to time in the $1,000 range. I considered a universal as well but with over 400 CD's already owned went with the stand alone as NO univ...
Which 5.1 ch Pre?
I'd second the Cal 2500. Phenomenal unit, easily in your price range,( can probably get one for $1,500) and as a bonus it is also an outstanding pre-amp.
what is your proceedure for setting up u'r system?
The Cardas Website has some excellent material on setting up main speakers. http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=insights&content_id=26&pagestring=Room+SetupThe link below provides a solid starting point for integrating your subwoofer.ht...
Ultimate Amplifier for the next 20 Years
There are some Ayre V-1XE's on Audiogon now that might fit the bill for what you are looking for in your price range...surprised they have not been mentioned before now. More muscle than the phenomenal V-5X's, and if I had your budget I would alre...
Suggestions for bang for your buck speaker cables
If you are not into building your own cabels, Element Cable pretty much utlizes the Jon Risch recipe on their twisted pair speaker cable. 18 foot run would be somewhere in the $275 - $350 range.
Pre-Amp Pass Through for HT
Noble,Appreciate the response. I performed the exact same test you did with a dual out CD player, and came to the same conclusion you did regarding a noticable difference with going throught he processor & pre-amp, but much more subtle differe...
Home theater center channel decision to make.
Eldartford,Agree with you that using a range of material with the cmparison is prudent. In my personal situation I give a clear edge to no center with most of the concert videos I have heard. Across a spectrum of other movies, (Gladiator, Remember...
Home theater center channel decision to make.
I actually had the Maestro and upgraded to the Oratorio, but have since sold te Maestro and went with the phantom center. Fronts are the Aerial 10-T's. The Oratotio did offer a significant level of improvement over the Maestro, the first movie we ...
Anyone with a high-end home theater sans sub?
Actually I have found that an HT setup with no center and a sub sounds superior to a center and no sub. I will caveat this with the fact that the fronts I am using are the Aerial 10 T's with a very nice processor, (Cal 2500).I'll go a step further...
Outstanding Drum Performances
Thanks for all of the input so far....I'll print this out and head to Borders & Best Buy later this afternoon to see how many of these I can come up with for the weekend. The Sheffield Drub Record sounds particularly interesting...hope I can f...
Reference Recordings from the 90's : Top 10
I wholeheartedly agree with the Alice in Chains Jar of Flies selection. I don't know why all Rock recordings can't sound this nice but I will go and try to find the unpludded CD this weekend.
Splicing on a HT to 2channel system, best approach
Hank,The first piece of equipment I would pursue would be a nice surround sound processor...you can tie your existing pre-amp to it via either your pre-amps pass thru function or if it does not have a pass through by setting it to unity gain when ...
Any problems with Springsteens DualDisc?
The Springsteen disk played fine in the car which was why I suspected that it simply did not conform close enough to Redbook standards to play in the Ayre CD player. It's peturbing that I needed to copy it onto a blank CD in order to listen to it ...
