"Slam"--what is it, is it really accurate?
Slam means macro dynamics in the bass registers - at least in my book.Walk into your local music shop and ask a salesperson to knock out four Beats on a kick drum. That's a good starting point to shoot for and can certainly be achieved in a good s...
MY REVIEW: Merlin TSM MMM BME
I own Merlins (VSM) and think very highly of them. In fact, I've owned them for almost 15 years now and liked them enough to spend on an upgrade several years ago. They still impress me every time I sit down to listen to them.I can also be found w...
have a sub question
I can't speak directly to your question, but sealed boxes are generally (tho I can't say "always") tighter (as in more highly damped) than ported boxes. On that basis, you might want to substitute the SB series - rather than the PB - from SVS for ...
subwoofer suggestions
I use a pair of 12" sealed Rythmik subs in my main system (in a significantly larger space than yours) and they are more than capable for my needs. Certainly worth checking out IMHO. I think a pair runs +/- $1300 these days.
Integrateds: $3K, $4.5K or $5K
No recommendation here, but a thought:You mention that you're using stand-mounted monitors. If you think that - down the road - you might add a subwoofer (or two) to that system, you might take a look at the HK 990 integrated from Harman Kardon. I...
So sub or not to sub
I'm a believer and use subs in my main system, but I used to own deCapos and I don't think that they're particularly well suited to mate with subs. The deCapo's top end is gently rolled and provides a really good octave to octave balance when used...
Chuck Mangione - Feels so Good
He can definitely play that horn. OK, a lot of the music he plays is lightweight, but that man got some skills! I saw him on a freezing cold night in Akron, Ohio ca 1977 and he made a long, uncomfortable road trip from Ann Arbor worth the effort.A...
PRIMA LUNA owners, what power tube are you using?
I use PL mono 6 amps with KT-66s. I've tried at least one example (usually two or three) of all suitable output tube types in these amps. While Merlin recommends EL 34s (and they do sound great) I marginally prefer the Gold Lion KT-66 tubes with m...
To Vandersteen or not to Vandersteen
I've owned deCapos, effectively lived with the Vandy 2 in a girlfriend's home many (many!) years ago, and have heard the Vandy 3 pretty extensively. In some respects, the Vandy 2/3 family is very different from the deCapo. Even putting aside the Va...
Great Artists with one great record
I'm not sure "great artist" applies, but The New Radicals were a terrific rock band that went "one and done". That one record, 1998's "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed, Too", was IMO one of the best rock records of the decade. The band's main man, Gr...
Best Rock Album in 2013
Mind Made Up by The Tedeschi-Trucks band is really, really good. I also like the new one from Brendan Benson. However, that was released just this week, so I need a few more spins before I could really stump for it.
Which component is most responsible?
Power cord.(and/or wall socket).
My first OLED display
IMHO, you gotta wait this one out.OLED technology is still changing pretty rapidly and AFAIK the "blue pixel" issue hasn't been solved, but instead worked around in a way that shouldn't provide much comfort when speculating about the life span for...
Upgrade from Verity Parsifal to Parsifal Encore??
Essrand,Parsifals present a modestly tough load, but tube amps can sound great, if they're a good match. My ARC VT-130SE sounded great with the P/E and, more importantly, so did my Cary 805s, which (at least nominally) appear to be a similar desig...
The future of preamps
For digital sources, preamps may also provide DAC and DSP, in addition to the functions that Ralph notes. I can foresee more HT style functionality creeping into the traditional preamps as digital sources continue to dominate, but I don't see the ...
