Billy Gibbons and the BFGs - Perfectamundo
Mofi,I like the Shelby Lynne episode a lot, but I like the episode in Hawaii with Todd Rundgren even more. For me, it's the absolute high water mark in the series. Of course, I'm a huge Todd Rundgren guy, so I may be a bit biased on this one ;-).
Rock with strings
Al,I think you mistook my intention (although it's possible that I didn't state it clearly). You cited a bunch of ballads (albeit ballads performed by rock bands) in your post. I wasn't really trying to reference that in my post. Strings are defin...
Artists that use the same song structure...
I think it's fair to point out that "avant-garde" is hard to pin down when discussing music. Does Phillip Glass qualify? If so, he probably fits the OP's question reasonably well as much of his work follows pretty formal structural rules. Actually...
Danish loudspeakers: Dynaudio & System Audio
I've heard several System Audio speakers at a local dealer and generally thought that they were solid, tho unexceptional performers. The small stand mounted monitors impressed me more than the larger models, FWIW.
Billy Gibbons and the BFGs - Perfectamundo
Spencer,Daryl Hall is probably my favorite pop singer (he's that guy that can sing the phone book and keep me riveted) and Bily Gibbons is a top 5 to 10 guitarist for me. So, no surprise that I agree with your sentiment....it's a wonderful episode...
Rock with strings
Generally a terrible idea IMO, but there's always an exception (or two) that proves the rule. Not sure what that exception might be in this case.
Artists that use the same song structure...
I was about to make Frogman's post - almost word for word. The observation re: the blues also applies (tho less precisely) to basic rock n roll song structures. Chuck Berry's song structures are almost as limited as haiku - and therein lies the ar...
$510.00 for an Aluminum cover for the ARC Ref. 10?
Ah, the world and the way it works! I had to laugh (maybe cry) when I saw this post. The ice dispenser in the door of my Viking fridge broke. (Note - this is endemic to Viking, they all break and there's a class action law suit out there seeking mo...
Hartley speakers--anyone heard/heard of?
IIRC (and I may not), Mark Levinson (the man, not the company) used Hartley woofers with Quads and a super tweeter in a very early assault on the loudspeaker SOTA. The system was highly regarded in many high-end circles and the Hartlley woofer was...
Sound stage
Staging is a function of both recording and playback equipment. I'd also agree with previous posts that there's no "perfect" paradigm that you're seeking for all recordings. Highly processed or manipulated recordings can even cause you to sense im...
Ohm Acoustics introduces its 20/20k beta speakers
BDP, I also use Audyssey with my subs, so I may have my Audiophile club card revoked at any time. OTOH, I get pretty spectacular results, so I guess it's a small enough price to pay.
I am loving my new psb powered sub
I have used a pair of Rythmik subs for six or seven years now, and they have elicited a similar respone from day one. IMO, a properly set-up high quality subwoofer is revelatory. My guess is that several manufacturers (including PSB, JL, and Rythm...
Does such a speaker exist?
I think Duke (as usual) makes an excellent point. The OP mentioned that he's heard speakers that meet his needs, with the exception of low bass performance. Duke (correctly) notes that low bass performance is - in the world of full/extended range ...
Ohm Acoustics introduces its 20/20k beta speakers
I use Ohm 100s with a pair of powered Rythmik subs and I'm a true believer in the approach. I also own Verity Parsifal Encores, SF Cremonas and Merlin VSMs, (as well as a pair of Maggie MMGs to switch out with the Ohms for use with the subs). The ...
"All Things Must Pass"-Tower Records Documentary
Oregonpapa,You are right, there was a Tower on the Southbound side of Topanga Canyon in Canoga Park/Woodland Hills. It was indeed just north of Toys R Us and Sees Candy. I moved here in 2006 and it felt new - I want to say that it hadn't been ther...
