How old are your speakers
My Ohms are almost 10 years old now. My Merlin VSMs are a few years older (but have been upgraded) and my Parsifal Encores are a year or three older than yours.
Input on speaker sizing for a lively room.
Ohm, Gallo, and MBL (budget permitting) were the first three names that came to my mind. All are nearly omnidirectional thru much of their passband. An array of subwoofers might make sense, too, although that might be a decor issue.
Whats the weirdest concert you ever attended?
A few come to mind. Seeing an act booed off the stage is always memorable. Especially when beer bottles have been hurled at the artists. So maybe it wasn't a great idea to have a reggae band (Toots and the Maytals) open for the Who in Detroit back...
looking for a recording with nice wide soundstage
I believe that Amused is a Q Sound recording. IME, all the Q Sound stuff has great (and pretty much unique to that system) staging/imaging. I'd do a search on Q Sound and see if any titles appeal to you.
Who believes that Robert Plant
Elvis, anybody?
Magnepan 20.7 - Ten Feet or More Into a Room?
When I did my room, my architect contacted an acoustic engineer who suggested room dimensions of 1.6 x ceiling height by 2.6 x ceiling height. It's a great sounding room. If you narrow your planned width by just a bit, you'll be right on top of th...
Songs that Inspire or Move you
Loomis and bdp,Love the call on "This Perfect World". I'm a huge Freedy fan. One of the best nights of live music I've ever seen was an early evening Freedy show at Irving Plaza followed by a late night Paul Westerberg show at Roseland. Only in NY...
Transmission line Subwoofers?
My local high end dealer has TBI subs set up for demo. I find them a little quirky sounding. I think some folks will love the "bloom" (lousy descriptor, but best I can come up with) that they provide in the bass, but not entirely convincing to me....
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Jock,I've found (and measured) the Ohms (I use S100s) to be very neutral. That's sometimes evident in the lower midrange/upper bass where some high-end designs are goosed a bit to sound richer or in the upper mids where extra energy gives some spe...
Best speakers to buy for around $1,500
Given my own personal priorities, I'd almost certainly go with Magnepan MMGs ($600) and a pair of SVS SB 1000 sealed 12" subwoofers ($950). That's a true full-range system of crazy high SQ potential. You'll have to do some work to optimize integra...
Some Musical Truths
I'll also give Tori Amos (not generally a huge fan) her due on this insight into male ego:"So you can make me come. That doesn't make you Jesus".
Who is your overall favorite guitarist?
If you're looking for a J-200, you should try to find a Kopp Trail Boss to compare. Kevin Kopp is an ex-Gibson guy who makes great (and unfortunately very expensive) variations on the standard Gibson models. The Trail Boss is his take on the J-200...
Who is your overall favorite guitarist?
Bdp,I think we agree on a lot:I'm with you on the beauty of overdriven, low output amps. I don't play a ton of electric guitar these days, but when I do it's either thru a 12 watt (dual 6v6) Nolatone Rotten Johnny or a 20 watt Swart AST (same outp...
Transmission line Subwoofers?
There are a bunch of DIY subwoofer designs on the web using TL enclosures, including one that (I believe) Teres Audio will build for you. If memory serves, Wisdom Audio (used to?) sells a finished product, as well. Not a lot of choices out there A...
Who is your overall favorite guitarist?
I kinda take both sides on this point. Check this thread. How many mentions of Chuck do you see? (I think I mentioned him, so I'll pat myself on the back.) That near absence from a pretty savvy 'goner thread on this very subject makes him under-ap...
