Most overlooked LPs in the last 20 years
I suspect that "overlooked" was just a less than perfect choice of words by the OP. On this forum, many posters are avid fans of truly OBSCURE bands/artists. The concept of a Pretenders record being more "overlooked" than their favorite records, c...
driving Verity Audio Parsifal Ovations?
Toronto,I was actually trying to provide you with a different data point. Basically, my experience with the P/Es suggest that 120 wpc of ss power should mate well - so, if you like a particular 120 wpc ss amp, you're probably good to go. OTOH, 30 ...
driving Verity Audio Parsifal Ovations?
I've (briefly) driven my Parsifal/Encore with a Bel Canto integrated. It worked nicely, although the combo was not particularly memorable. The P/Es are a modestly difficult load and at least a little bit of grunt is required to drive them well, 30...
Is a Sub worth the bother?
I'm glad Vero made it work on his budget. Note my qualifications: IME and IMO.I tried a more modest budget and failed. Wanted it to work - and it didn't - FOR ME. I would not try again without a Digital Room Correction/Parametric EQ device. But as...
best vocal harmonies in rock
Slaw's mention of the Jayhawks reminded me to mention "The Reivers" AKA America's great lost rock band. They had some fantastic, albeit quirky, harmonies on each of their records.Marty
Novice needs help: Sonos 50w amp and ? speakers
I have seven Sonos zone players ("ZPs") scattered throughout my house and they are connected to a wide variety of speakers. Personally, I'd hesitate to spend big $ on monitors for this purpose. The combination of (usually in my case) compressed pr...
Is active speaker the future?
In one respect, they are the present. Check out the speakers hooked to your PC or Mac. However, I'm assuming that this isn't the part of the speaker market to which you refer:Active, digitally corrected speakers from companies like B&O and Lyn...
Is a Sub worth the bother?
IME, subs do 3 or 4 things by design (depending on how they're implemented) and a fourth by default:1) They provide sub bass below 30hz (some say 20hz, as a practical matter I'll say 30hz). To buy a sub that does this well is a very expensive prop...
Room matters
These recent posts raise an interesting question: To those with experience measuring in-room FR, where do you find the most significant anomalies? I have experience with 4 rooms, and in all cases the issues below about 150hz to 175hz just dwarfed ...
Room matters
More clarification:If you wander through these threads, you will find a fair bit of evidence that the purist signal path to which I referred in my post is a "primary point" of the hobby for a fair number of 'philes. I understand the rewards of tha...
Room matters
Kal,Yikes! I just googled the MSRPs of the models you mentioned.Just to be clear - Over the past couple of years I have found your posts to these threads invaluable. Along with Drew E., Bob Reynolds and Shadorne, these comments have completely cha...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Bond,One other thought: I've measured the in-room response of my Ohms and they are actually very neutral relative to many of the other high end speakers that I've owned. They are neither elevated nor underdamped through the upper bass, which may c...
Room matters
Kal,The head says "Yessir! Couldn't agree more!", but it's the soul -or possibly nether regions- that begs to disagree. Since this hobby is (purportedly) for fun, I use an approach that tries to satisfy both pleasure centers. I know that "splittin...
Room matters
Shauns,Yes!MartyPS The biggest problem with Tact/Lyngdorf/Audyssey etc digital room correction is that is philosphically incompatible with the audiophile notion of "purity". However, every one of these systems that I have auditioned works wonders,...
the smoothest sounding speaker
For me, a little extra mid bass (or a little underdamping), combined with the falling FR through the presence region mentioned by Duke, defines "smooth". Vandy's model 2 meets the description pretty well, so I assume that this is what you're after...
