What speakers to match my new cary 805 AE
I own a pair and they are much less restrictive in speaker matching than most SETs, probably due to their pretty robust power output. I've even successfully used them with the Verity Parsifal/Encore, a modestly difficult load that will devour many...
Worst record ever?
Slothman,I strongly disagree! Not only is Bo Donaldson's "Billy Don't Be a Hero" NOT the worst record ever, it's not even the worst recording of that song. That honor, IMHO, goes to Paper Lace. It is, however, a close call - so props to you, anyway...
How do you listen to new music?
A fairly complicated routine has evolved over time:New music purchases usually come in monthly to quarterly batches of somewhere between 6 to 12 CDs.Half go into the car and get popped into the changer. I'll fire up the one I've been most anxious ...
Who was the best jazz guitarist ever?
I'm tempted to say it starts and ends with Django, but Duane is - per usual - on point. What do you value most in a player? For historical influence, you probably go with Charlie Christian, since he is generally credited with inventing the whole no...

Benefits of a cardioid subwoofer?
Drew,Thanks, the dipole effect on gross output level didn't occur to me in considering this question.Kirkus,Your point re: unpredictable distance to various boundaries certainly did occur to me and, intuitively, it seems to suggest that the benefi...
Benefits of a cardioid subwoofer?
Duke,So the null is behind, rather than beside the cabinet (normal dipole) - I'm not sure how that plays out. If the sub is in free space, there will be less/no subsequent reflection off the wall behind the woofer which should reduce random destru...
Zappa question
Thanks to all who've taken the time to offer advice. Collectively, I'm pretty comfortable that this group intimately knows the terrain in the Zappa sandbox - so I'm off to CDconnection. You've give me quite a lot to digest (and even more to buy). ...
Benefits of a cardioid subwoofer?
Duke,Thanks for clarifying, but that raises another question:Both waves will still be omnidirection. So, the wave from the forward woofer goes outward (not forward), there is a computed delay, and then the back wave goes outward (not forward). Thi...
Best subwoofer under $1,500 for Magnepan 3.6R
My own view in matching subs to my Maggie MMGs is that a sub controller is very helpful in achieving seamless integration (I use the Velodyne SMS-1) and probably more important than the choice of sub itself. Duke's observations re: smooth response...
Best CD I've heard so far 2011.........
Just spun thru the new Feelies CD "Here Before". Just what the doctor ordered! The first half picks up just where they left off on their last release (in 1991!) and the second half wanders off in somewhat new directions.
Benefits of a cardioid subwoofer?
Honestly, I'm not sure that the idea is even workable. Low frequencies (long wavelengths) wrap around the baffle and become omnidirectional regardless of the launch pattern. Below 100hz, I'd think front baffle mounted, cardioid (bi/di-polar), and ...
Perfect Debute Albums
Yet another Mumford supporter. Best debut that I can recall in well over a decade.I'll also add The Feelies eponymous first record to the list.
Best Rock Album in 2011
Mofi,A friend at Warner Music told me that they are VERY high on the new Stevie Nicks record. That said......Tonight is a big one for me. Lindsey Buckingham is premiering his soon to be released CD "Seeds We Sow" in Beverly Hills tonight and I jus...
