frequency range for instrument vs speaker
Clearly a sub often if not usually makes a big difference but the existence of lower frequencies in the harmonics is not required to explain it.Often when adding a sub, the difference can be the result of the sub being able to better deliver flat ...
More power for better sound at low volumes?
"I do note in my travels that in the US there is a tendency to overdampen rooms, and suspect that if a listening room is overdamped, details get lost at lower listening levels."I would agree. My wife bought me a very nice plush recliner for my list...
More power for better sound at low volumes?
Magnepan and triangle are the low volume champs i have owned. The lightweight yet rigid paper cone used in tbe triangle bass/mid driver is a big reason. The Triangles are fairly efficient, maggies not, so that does not support any efficiency theor...
More power for better sound at low volumes?
I would expect those Martin Logan's and and any good electrostat to sound pretty good on the grand scale compared to other speaker types at low volume. Same with Maggies/planars. Traditional cone designs can sound as good at low volume or even bet...
why do we argue?
Actually, Dan wrote:"Why do people want to get philosophical in a hobby forum? :-) "Note the smiley face. I know I missed it at first.Actually, I find our Chimp-like DNA (this is a scientific fact I believe the # I have read is 95%+ similar) a muc...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Tex,Yes, those are an interesting approach to a point source/wide dispersion/omni type design!I would only point out that they do not appear to make any use of Walsh driver technology though, so they can't "out-Walsh" anything in that sense, for w...
The Problem with Synergistic Research
I tend to think about these things in a manner similar to Sabai. It's amazing to me that especially in these days of a rough economy, the internet, free information flow, etc. that more do not go out of the way a bit in the interest of good custome...
More power for better sound at low volumes?
Good points by the Wolf man.Differences in sound at low volume may have some to do with the system, particularly the speakers, but yes a lot to do with you and how room acoustics work."sound is made of waves travelling through the dense air in you...
why do we argue?
No, I am not arguing even though that is the subject and we haven't figured out why!I would never argue about why do we argue. That is twice as bad, possibly even 4X worse on a log scale!Still craving that banana though....
What stereo amp sounds better than digital monos?
IS you pre-amp SS or tube?If tube, any amp with 60K or greater input impedance might offer an improvement. I seem to recall that most of the amps you have had might not fall into that category for best match to a tube pre-amp but not certain.IF a ...
What stereo amp sounds better than digital monos?
Boulder might have something different and perhaps better to offer, but not cheap!
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
"I don't easily get all romantic and gobbly-goopy about them except when the right vintage recordings are playing."BTW, the right vintage recordings sometimes includes even old 78's that I occasionally purchase, play on an old Admiral ceramic cat ...
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
Uh-oh, the cat's out the bag!Personally, I would agree with the OPS premise and would think it applies to most except perhaps some of those who like turntables just because they are turntables. I fall into that category. I gre up with and love tur...
More power for better sound at low volumes?
A lot of vintage gear used to have loudness controls and other tone control features that due to how the human ear works were useful at low volumes sometimes but required manual interaction to activate/use.Its possible that this could still be par...
why do we argue?
Craving a banana......!
