Beatles covers: better than originals?
Wanted to toss in Jeff Beck's instrumental take on "She's A Woman" from "Blow to Blow". Great interpretation, playing and recording. I think it was produced by George Martin as well if I remember correctly.
How can a subwoofer expand the soundstage?
"I thought its because the subwoofer is omnidirectional in the lower region and thus adds to and expands the soundstage that the conventional speakers, whose sonic signature is directional, can't possibly convey."Omni=directional speakers apply th...
Caravan - does anyone listen anymore?
Album and song titles + naughty lyrics.
Mark Knophler; recommended music??
Love Knopfler's solo work and much of Dire Straits. He is a very unique artist. Nobody comes to mind off-hand as very similar really.Have you ever spun any Chet Atkins disks? He was more of a country artist mostly but one of Knopfler's biggest inf...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Yeah, I saw that.A good price if you can pick them up and are truly restored to good working order. That's the tricky part. Many who loved the original Fs are skeptical at best regarding the CLS design that supplanted them. The unique thing about th...
Mystical Performances
Toss in the tune 'Still Life" by Van Der Graaf Generator as well, especially the closing cadence.
Rock: well recorded bass...60s/70s
Looks like Smacky's English leaves a bit to be desired, but I think I am able to decipher what he/she is saying.Hugh Banton plays organ for Van Der Graaf Generator and apparently has interesting organ-related business interests building church org...
High End system sounding Terrible????
"My advice, use a 2 channel rig for movies and music."That is what I do. Surround sound is more trouble than its worth to me. I like the best sound and to keep it simple as possible.I use a vintage Yamaha CR-640 2 channel receiver I picked up for ...
sounstage too big bad thing
You're getting good advice.Playing with speaker orientation/location to lock in the new soundstage the way you want is definitely the first thing to experiment with before changing anything else.
sounstage too big bad thing
Hmm, soundstage should be mostly in front of you, not over your head. You have some interesting but perhaps unnatural things going on, perhaps due to room acoustics?Synergy is everything. Not all good pieces work well in every room to every ones t...
sounstage too big bad thing
SOmetimes, also, it can just be your ears take time to adapt to a different sound stage as a result of some component change than they were used to before. A bigger soundstage should almost always be a better thing. You may have to tweak and adapt...
sounstage too big bad thing
A bigger sound stage may require that you listen farther back than usual. When done right and listened to from a location with an amicable perspective, it should be a good thing. There can be more separation between instruments or recording lines ...
How can you tell if a recording is in mono?
If you get different sounds in left versus right, you are getting stereo. The sounds you hear in each is a result of the way the stereo recording was mixed and mastered. It is what it is.When you hit the mono switch, the two channels are merged an...
CD drive improves HD rip quality?
Some drives will have lower error rates than others but it is the drive and ripping software together that matters. Higher error rates off the optical drive will result in re-reads of the same data multiple times and hence longer rip times though ...
Rock: well recorded bass...60s/70s
"Still Life" Van Der Graaf Generator. Lots of low organ notes recorded well in an otherwise sparse mix on tunes like the title track, very rare for rock genre recordings.
