External hard drives and sound quality
The only thing I can add is that with my music server setup which has used both internal and external storage, I cannot attribute any sonic differences to the disk storage media used and I will loose no sleep over this. Changes to any of the parts...
External hard drives and sound quality
some disk drives are physically noisier than others (fans, etc.). You might be able to hear them if in the listening room. Adding an external drive might add noise to that from the computer itself resulting in more background noise than otherwise....
ICE Amps for classical music?
I think the max dynamic range in Redbook CD format is 96db. Maybe someone can confirm.
The Harbeth phenomenon
OHM speakers (www.ohmspeakers.com) have a unique and large scale following as well, both in and out of the high end niche. Distinctive sound and design, high value, the same basic approach more or less for about 40 years now, and outstanding custo...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Yes, I did the measurement thing years ago out of curiosity, and I also had an Audio Control auto EQ unit at one point. These days, I have no interest and just trust my ears.I can add that increasing treble levels on Walsh 5s using the on-board ad...
The Harbeth phenomenon
Many speaker designs look similar and in general sound more similar than not as well. Harbeths are distinctive looking and sounding compared to most others these days as well from what I gather. They are also well made as best I can tell. So they ...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
"What I cannot abide are speakers with messy FR and dispersion curves as that can only worsen in-room FR.I can say with confidence that that the OHMs should rate very well in this aspect.
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Interesting MWTs (which I have not heard) were more forward. No Walshes I have heard are.It could have to do with tonal balance in a particular room. WHen the supertweeter is more predominant, I have noticed soundstage tends to be smaller. Perhaps...
If money were no object, what would be in your rig
YEs, the mbl 101s are speakers for a man's man. The Dos EQuis guy (the most interesting man in the world) runs them I hear. When women hear his system, well, you know what happens......Good listening, my friends!
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Its true our ears are sensitive detectors of sound.Try the old test of listening normally and with hands cupped behind the ears to see how much difference can be heard in response to a small change.
I need help - Better DAC or NEW CD player?
You might get a different and perhaps "better" sound with different sounding DACs at that price but nothing clearly better in a player IMHO.I have been very satisfied with both mhdt DACs I run ( SS constantine and tubed Paradisea). These can be ha...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
One way o another, speakers (including OHMs) must be mated with amps that are well suited to diving them optimally. Optimally often infers the best case for achieving a generally (if not exactly) flat response. Same true with OHMs.Active speaker d...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
BTW, I supect a full/wider range Walsh driver like those found in original OHM Fs or perhaps even newer versions of those might be able to take massed strings up a level in comparison to OHMs Walshes, which use a separate supertweeter. Full range ...
ICE Amps for classical music?
Yes (assuming used with speakers that benefit form high power, high current SS amplification)! The BEl Canto Ref1000 mkii delivers all the goods in my system even with power hungry larger OHM Walshes and I have yet to see it break a sweat, even wit...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Rplef,That's a very good question.Audiogoner Mamboni is a professional classical musician and major OHM proponent I believe.Getting those aspects of classical music right as you decribe has been one of the driving factors that has landed me where ...
