Merlin TSM with Manley Mahi-Mahi?
Other than for pop/rock and perhaps movies at higher volumes perhaps, probably a reasonable move for a smaller room, assuming it matches well with the Manley pre-amp and you are up for dealing with a tube power amp.Tube amps appear to be popular w...
Is this clipping?
Agree overdriving amp (clipping) and overdriving speaker are two different (bad) things. With loud recordings, you have a lose/lose scenario if amp is underpowered. You can keep the volume up as intended and distort due to clipping or be forced to ...
Is this clipping?
Well, if the system is clipping as a result, the results will not be good, that is for sure!Overdriving the speakers won't help either. Both together is the double whammy.
Is this clipping?
Unsound,My experience over the years has been that most all rock/pop recordings suffer if the system is underpowered or undersized, among other things. The ultimate quality of these compared to others on the grand scale of things doesn't matter. W...
Is this clipping?
PEople are sometimes under the misconception that rock/pop music is the easiest to get right. When it does not sound good, the recording is blamed. I have not found that to be the case. Large scale classical and many rock/pop recordings especially...

Sounds like textbook tube soft clipping to me.
78 rpm & related cds
I took a chance and bought a cheap Sylvania ceramic cartridge idler drive at a yard sale for $10 just for the purpose of playing old 78s to record to digital. THis was a home run. Th old 78s from the 1920s-1940s sound great on my modern system and...

"It really, really worries you?!"No it really doesn't worry me at all.Just expressing an opinion since someone brought it up. I just do not approve of government spending policies in general and also wonder who determines what is culturally signif...

"The market does not preserve."I understand what your saying. True historical sites of significance require preservation to prevent destruction. Also original artifacts. However, recordings are marketable items readily available for reasonable cost...
50' speaker or 50' interconnect?
Al, good points.Cheers!
Single driver point source speakers vs. the world?
Unsound, have you heard any of the Tannoys that fit this mold?I have not. Would like to though. I love the classic look of their prestige line. Yes, expensive though. Also some are horn loaded. I know you don't like that.....
solid state vs tubes
Atmas,Darn, I thought I submitted you on this topic.Oh well...So another way to look at it then is the soft clipping approach distorts the loudness cues by reducing them to make them more digestible to human ears.OK, but real sound in the real wor...
50' speaker or 50' interconnect?
Hmm, I would have tended to run the speaker wires longer for fear that longer runs of low level signal wires are more subject to noise and interference from external sources. I guess not so much if shielded.BTW, I have speakers up to about 15-20 y...

Interesting.SHould the government be spending money to preserve the things that apparently nobody cares enough otherwise to preserve?I would tend to say no. Let the open market determine what is worth preserving. I do not want my taxpayer dollars ...
Speakers to big room
Bvdiman sounds like he has the experience with these. His recommendations all sound reasonable to me.Often, placement within the room, interactions with floors and walls, etc. can make all the difference. Definitely make sure the setup within teh r...
