why does NBC sound so bad? are networks different
Seems to be program related, too.Was watching an hour show one nite. Every time they went to this one scene, the sound had a buzz to it. rest of show? fine. It was obviously some kind of production mistake. Many music specials.....Diana Krall comes...
Cat-proofing your speakers...
Kij is once again pretty spot on.I put it a little differently. You can hope for 'cat resistant'....probably not more. Cat proof? Nearly impossible once they get there single cell brain on a subject. IF you make an 'issue' of something with violenc...
bel canto and wyred 4 sound
ALL the ICE amps have more in common than big differences. has anyone EVER done a 'd' shootout? FWIW, my 'd' amp, a PSAudio, drives my 1.6 maggies without effort.
Best Solder??
If a proper mechanical connection is made, does the solder really make that much of a difference?
Advice for first pair of Maggies
The MMG is sold 'money back' in 30 or 60 days. If you've got the room, you could give it a try. But, I'd find a retail outlet first, just to get the general idea. You have 'upgrade' privilages, too. In the first year, you can trade up with various ...
impedance question
The speaker level inputs on your sub should have very high input impedance and will not draw power from the amp OR effect it's ability to drive low impedance loads. You could, if you wanted to run the mains full range, just wire them as normal and...
How Much Difference Does a More Powerful Amp Make?
Approaching your question from the speaker side. Sensitivity is not the end of the amp/speaker problem. 'goodness' of load is more about phase angle then just sensitivity. A very highly reactive load will be worse, even if much more 'sensitive'. F...
Best Amp for Magnepan 1.7?
Insinuation:An unpleasant hint or suggestion of something badWho insinuated anything? Are my (factual) remarks about ICE amp time/power limits considered a 'dis'? With most a good rule of thumb being peak / continueous power needed of about 1:10, ...
Best Amp for Magnepan 1.7?
You can't go seriously wrong with ANY of the ICE based 'd' amps. They all have more in common with one another than BIG differences....this is true of all of 'em....W4S, BelCanto and all the rest. My PSAudio is a.....well, since it came first, the...
Magnepan 1.7 too bright, HELP
Yes....and no.Magnepans are 'voiced' under certain listening conditions with certain upstream equipment. You CAN use the resistor to attenuate HF output. The DIY crowd is also, for some reason, a big fan of Low DCR inductors in the bass, which rais...
Surge Suppression vrs. Lighting and Power Spikes
Yep, Troy, I hear you. Florida Flicker and Flash was the power company.I lived in Florida, both N.Miami and Tampa until I was 20 or 21, so I never even rented, let alone bought a house. But for darn sure, i'd have whole house surge protection, in a...
Surge Suppression vrs. Lighting and Power Spikes
Start with whole house surge protection::http://www.surgeassure.com/Leviton makes a similar device for the main panel. If I still lived in Florida, I'd have one installed immediately. Unplug. yes...... the voltage induced in a line by lightning wi...
Zu Omen Defs and Ice Amps?
The total resistivity of the woofer panel / inductor is over 4 ohms....The ICE amp I use will yield a pretty high DF.I'd be careful changing inductor Resistance since it will cause a change in driver balance and effect crossover point. My DIY desi...
Zu Omen Defs and Ice Amps?
If you are worried about 'excess damping factor', toss a power resistor in series with the speaker. That'll lower the damping factor! And 'simulate' a current source amp, using SS. Carver did it and so did Pass (experimentally)The Zu enclosure / d...
WOW; great stuff at THE Show, Newport this weekend
Yes, I will just post my non-binding opinion. My background is limited in the number of systems I've heard. All I know is that I simply didn't like the Focal. At 180 large! WOW, If I had that kind of loot lying about, I'd be tempted to take a year ...
