Magnepan 20R vs 20.1Rs
'only'?The difference between push/pull Maggie drivers and 'the rest' is substantial. The pole piece is a substantial part of the speaker. As a matter of fact, i rotate my panels to pole piece TO the listener. Magnepan all were this way until somet...
Actually difference between class A and AB?
The amp that sounds better to YOU is better, regardless of 'class'. As Stanwal aludes, 'a' amps run HOT. If you can lift a 100x2 'a' amp, you are either real strong or don't buy it. All things being equal, you'd have trouble telling the best of 'e...
Actually difference between class A and AB?
Yes, the A/A-B debate verges on the '3rd rail' of hifi. Toss in NFB and it is downright toxic. However, would anyone consider it true that the best A amp is better than an inferior A/B design...and the reverse? Meiwan's 'individual design' remark ...
How many dedicated lines are enough?
I made do with a single additional line for amp / sub.The other gear is plugged in thru a power conditioner with several banks of dedicated outlets, including the digital gear thru a 400va iso transformer.
stacked baby maggies?
Go to Planar Asylum and posit your question there. I don't know how many DIY guys hang out here, at least on the panel speaker side of the fence.Look up 'Frankenpan' and maybe get in touch with the owner / poster. So much lore exists for panels, a...
Help Me Build a Second System For Less than $10000
Bryston or Naim integrated....that is, if you can get along with Naim.Choose speakers at the same time, for compatibility reasons. One of the computer based 'server' style head units is a great idea. No need to spend 10k. You could spend 1/2 that ...
Help Me Build a Second System For Less than $10000
How much room? Floor standers? Stand mount? Room for panels? What is your source requirement? CD/RedBook? SACD? Computer based? Vinyl? The primary listening position? In bed?
What happens to an amp below 2 ohms?
Phase is simply put, Power Factor. Another measure of reactance. The larger the phase angle, the less power delivered to the load. A 1000 watt amp trying to drive a load which has a 90` phase angle will deliver exactly ZERO power at that frequency...
Two subs or not Two subs?
A single sub, if located properly AND large enough to excite the OPs 3000 cubic feet would be fine. My room, larger in all dimensions, and irregularly shaped, is fine with a 12" sub with 'only' 250 watts. It is a HSU Research VTF 2/III. And even t...
Tri-amping 3.6R's; what amp for the ribbons?
class 'a'?Pass xa30.5 clean 30x2 which near triples to almost 100 in a/b, both while nearly doubling into 4 ohms. I wish I could afford Pass for my panels. I'd do so without even extensive audition and doubt I'd ever look back.
Tri-amping 3.6R's; what amp for the ribbons?
The reason I bring up relative amp power is that for someone like yourself, for which too loud is NEVER loud enough, you theoretically want both amps to redline at the same time. You can always turn the 'louder' amp down, but did you turn it down ...
Cabinet Making Crossover Tweakers
What about companies that use a special build of an otherwise 'stock' driver?Doesn't Wilson use Seas or Vifa?
Tri-amping 3.6R's; what amp for the ribbons?
Yes, I believe in the biamp setup, that the 500 is underpowered relative to the 1kw, with the crossover at 200hz.For 'average' music, the 50:50 point is about 350hz. So, with an even lower crossover it may be 45:55 or perhaps worse. I'd start by u...
Tri-amping 3.6R's; what amp for the ribbons?
I was just floating the idea that power needed is related to the crossover frequency. 10k was an extreme example and used to illustrate how little power is needed above very high crossover frequencies. If you had the perfect amount of power per 'wa...
Tri-amping 3.6R's; what amp for the ribbons?
Given the low crossover of 200hz, I'd say the upper freqs are under powered, especially for someone who like to crank 'em until just short of farting....however loud THAT is!The 50:50 power point is around 350hz for 'average' music. Right now, I'd...
