To port or not to port There are some good points raised; what is the output power of the amp into 4 ohms and have you listened to the PSBs with the sub removed? It would be interesting to know if the spkrs exhibit the same sonic problems in the bass.
Why are CD's decling in quality? The Japanese use 2 different technologies.. SHM-CD and XRCD. SHM-CD uses a special polycarbonate plastic on the data side and allows for more accurate reading by the laser. There is also a SACD version. So the disk material is actually different t...
Why are CD's decling in quality? "I think we're finally getting someplace with some of the best sounding CDs coming out recently."I'll agree with that Rja. Quick story... around 1985 when I bought my first CDs, I found out quickly that they were not superior to vinyl (I had a $25...
Why are CD's decling in quality? I have not found the quality of the modern CD disk to be inferior over time. That said, buying prerecorded CDRs is a different story; it's buyer beware. But, I think others will share my practice of treating a CD as I treat my vinyl, with kid gloves.
To port or not to port The brass footers are fine, but you need to get the wood stands off the floor with some kind of footer that would dig into the carpet. I think the result would be a tighter bass. If you change to loaded metal stands, you would definitely need to s...
To port or not to port I have used your PSBs, so first a couple of questions; what kind of stands are you using and how far from the wall are the spkrs? If you're not using isolation on the stands, the floor could be adding resonance to the bass. The floor could cause l...
Have Good DAC, Will This Work A Transport? If it is a Modwright Sony it would be an excellent transport, and with the tube mod it would sound great on its own.
Tubes 101 Congrats on the new Primaluna. Look at the Tube Store plus Brent Jesse provides very good info on tube types, country of origin, and how they sound.Brent lists of all the brands and their sonic signature. ie: Telefunken...detailed, Mullard...warm,...
Manufacturer speaker power recommendations The recommendation by a spkr manufacturer is for minimum watts needed to drive the spkr and for nominal wattage, not peaks. Peak wattage is usually 4x higher, but that is a very short duration.A 300 watt amp would mean it could provide a peak sign...
Back to TT after 24 years Yes, the bearing oil may need to be added and the belt changed. Don't know the Rega, but the capacitors on any TT should be checked after such a long time in storage. Most likely the caps would have become dry.The cart may be fine, mine was ok aft...
Primaluna ProLogue Five VS. Classe CA-150 A 36 wpc amp with KT88 Output Tubes, bet it sounds nice but we're flying blind without knowing the speaker and it's specs.
Tweeter type and brightness Mapman makes a good point regarding the DAC being the cause of troublesome high frequencies. If the harshness persists with the new spkrs, try a different CDP/DAC as a test.
Please Help Me Understand Have you checked to see if you are using the MM setting on the pre and not the MC? The Moving Coil setting is for a low output cart. You need the MM setting (usually 47Kohm) which is a high gain output.I found this online regarding the Audio Horiz...
Is computer audio pushing up the price of CDPs? Small world, Jim. World Wide Audio in Bryn Mawr is kickin ass and has expanded into higher-end. They also have impressive showrooms for HT and cater to all those wealthy Bryn Mawr suckers..."of course you need 4K right now and better upgrade your ...
Tweeter type and brightness There are many factors in design and implementation that make drivers, metal or soft dome or whatever, sound the way they do.I agree with you Wolf, but when somebody has a hearing condition where high frequencies can cause discomfort or even pain,... |
