Looking for integrated better than my Rogue Sphinx
Jim, If your Sphinx sounds like it's clipping and you can hear distortion during loud listening sessions, changing the tubes in the preamp stage isn't going to help your situation.Stay the course and get an amp with higher current.

Do I need a pre-amp?
Lionsdwarf,Hold on...one thing at a time. Stay with your original plan and add a vinyl setup to your Marantz. What you're proposing is possible but it will get complicated and you really don't need the amp yet.FYI, as far as the phono preamp goes,...

To Yu11375...Thanks for all the info. I found some Berliner CD recordings on YouTube, btw.So it looks like there was no additional remastering done to make the box set, they used the digital masters from the 80s and 90s. I expect that there will b...
What is your favorite Mozart symphony?
@ 77jovian,These are the Charles Mackerras/Prague/Telarc CDs in Box Set or individual CDs.Small orchestra, modern instruments, DDD. Mackerras has a great feel for Mozart, I've collected many of the Cds.
What is your favorite Mozart symphony?
Schubert,I have about 10 of the Mackerras/Prague/Telarc CDs and the performances are very good, and the sonics are outstanding. When Telarc gets it right, it's like you are in the middle of the concert hall. Which version were you recommending?
Danish loudspeakers: Dynaudio & System Audio
To minimize low frequency reflections, which will be heard as a thickening of the sound, the loudspeaker models can be adapted to the room’s acoustic character by using foam plugs in the bass reflex port.Yes, that does help in certain situations. ...

Many thanks, Yu11375. I've been listening on YouTube and Bohm really has a way with Mozart that I like very much.

Wim1983,The PSB Synchrony One B, like all PSBs, has a very nice warm feel to it and a huge soundstage. It's very enjoyable to listen to and capable of smooth mids and deep bass, but it's rear-ported and needs to have room away from the wall. Too c...
Rock with strings
The aforementioned artists using violin in their compositions is different than what the OP is referring to. He's talking about massed string sections.Even Siouxsie and the Banshees added cello to their later works. Nothing wrong with adding a "Cl...

Jl35, you're right of course. The lower-tier floorstanders have front ports, including the Lektor monitors. I had to look it up, sorry for the misinformation. It's been a while since I listened to some Dali monitors and they were Helicon's; no front...
Rock with strings
ELO is a concept that worked very well. What doesn't work well is when a producer throws a string section behind a R&R band.
Do I need a pre-amp?
Take a look at the phono preamps on Needle Doctor. As far as NAD, it seems decent, but don't choose a phonostage until you have a TT and a cartridge selected. They need to match. For a TT, look at the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC, a good entry level in...
Do I need a pre-amp?
On websites like Needle Doctor, when you choose a budget TT which includes tonearm aND cart, you have access to suitable phonostages.

I saw ELP live in 77 with full orchestra at MSG NY. Incredible performance, well suited for their style of music. The editing of the album and YouTube videos don't do it justice.
