Help with speaker choice
of your choices, i can vouch for the vmps rm30--very easy to place and drive (93db efficiency), good low end extension and really, really nice transparent highs. your other choices are all well-regarded (i haven't heard the adagios), but i'd look ...
Name your lame duck artist........
just a word in defense of sheryl crow. i'm not gonna claim she's godlike, but i think she gets unfairly maligned, probably because she's milfy and pops up a lot in people magazine. she's actually a good musician, with a knack for melody--like stev...
Name your lame duck artist........
conceptually, i'd divide the foregoing into specific categories:1. artists of no discernible musical ability who nonetheless have value as image makers, trendsetters etc. (madonna, bon jovi, cher)2. especially annoying ass clowns who nonetheless ha...
Need small subwoofer for thump
you can get a used mirage or energy (same company) sub on ebay for less than $150 on ebay--they're both very musical. the paradigm pdr 8 or pdr 10 will also serve you fine in the same range. for a few bucks more, an hsu stf will give you A BIGGER ...
paradigm s8 v3 vs. revel f52 any preference ?
two great speakers--you can't really go wrong with either. the paradigms are easier to drive and place and I believe have the smaller footprint; for loud music they'd probably be my choice. i'd encourage you to audition both.
Amplifier for Revel Studio v.1
the revels need tons of power--i use 250w/side with my f32s. i just don't see 7ow cutting it--you'll hear much more bloom and low end extension with much more juice.
Any suggestions for good obscure music?
"bloomed" is vg, albeit more conventional than buckner's later stuff, which can really get embedded in your brain if you let your guard down.at jax2's suggestion, i did listen to some live stuff from jeffrey focault (on archive.org, the greatest w...
Any suggestions for good obscure music?
for some reason, sufjan stevens reminds me of yanni. foucault is on my ever-expanding listi saw richard buckner playing outdoors on a saturday afternoon at the taste of chicago fest. he started out with a lengthy, obscene, unintentionally hilarous...
Any suggestions for good obscure music?
jax2--i'll definitely check out your alexi murdoch. i'll also throw out two more, than shut up:1. richard buckner--devotion and doubt. a real twisted puppy, once described as sounding like uncle tupelo on a bad day; really pretty, tuneful, strange...
Any suggestions for good obscure music?
if you like folkie stuff, check out the third party, by jules shear. probably the worst selling record in major label history, it features extremely good songwriting (shear is a renowned songwriter who has written hits for cyndi lauper, the bangle...
Magnepan for a small room
i second (or third) the von schweikert or proac recommendations; alternatively i see rega rs5, totem staaf or totem model 1 listed within your budget. placement issues aside, the maggies absolutely would need a sub
Looking for good repair shop in Chicago
i wasn't happy with deltronics. sterep exchange does a good job; van l on western avenue also knows what he's doing, esp. with speaker repair.
Choice between receivers
the early 70s yammie rcvrs have some collector's cachet, look nice and sound quite good. the late 60s/early 90s stuff like your rx were nothing special sonically or cosmetically. so i'd keep the older one.
Recommendations for 5-Disc Carousel Player
i've owned, or still own, a bunch of changers and my favorite remains the integra cdc units, which regualrly list on ebay for $50 or so. nice smooth mechanism, 6 disc capability, very good build quality. the denons are extremely noisy and poorly b...
Running 4 speakers from a 2-channel amp
there are a number of speaker selectors (niles comes to mind) you can attach to the amp which provide for impedance matching--i.e. you can match the resistance of your speakers to the selector so the amp doesn't get overloaded. the added advantage...
