Alex Chilton RIP gotta disagree, jimjoyce--i've met the guy (really nice and unassuming, btw) and i don't think his ego's an issue--it's more like he needs to sing his own songs in order to deliver 'em properly. game theory songs sung by, say eddie vedder or rober...
Alex Chilton RIP game theory/loud family are great, criminally underrecognized bands who in a parallel universe would be big stars. too bad that scott miller is forever condemned by his reedy little voice to mere cult figure. i believe aimee mann (no slouch hersel...
Good center speaker to match Von Schweikert VR-1s? the traditional wisdom, which is subscribe to, is to match your fronts and centers (the rears being less criticial). von schweikert does make a center, which pop up in the classifieds now and then; even better, i'd use another vr-1.
high end speakers? ... not sure what brands/model to put things in perspective, if your paradigms were a car, they'd be a honda accord--an excellent, tops-in-its-class all-arounder; more than enough car for many people. to get more perfromance and refinement, you'd need to pay a 50% premium for s...
Problem with a Marantz AV9000 i'd get a battery back up/surge protector unit ($25 on ebay) and keep your gear plugged into it.
Revel Studio2, Thiel 3.7 or Wilson Sophia 2 ritmo, the thrust of the above comments, which seem sound, is that you'll need to upgrade all your gear to do justice to upgraded speakers. my question would be: what are you presently lacking with your current speakers (i think the f32s are outst...
Alex Chilton RIP really excellent post, zaikesman--i'd forgotten about the cramps. truthfully, i never thought much of his post bs work, most of which sounded half-baked or acid-fried, and the boxtops weren't much more than a studio concoction with three or so gre...
In-wall speakers recommendations audio advisor is also listing energy veritas in walls for $299 each (marked down from $900). awfully good speaker at that price.
Preamp predicament as an owner and big fan of the alpha 9, i concur with the change the speakers and sub posters. i really don't think your preamp is holding you back.
Alex Chilton RIP really sad shocking news--big star wrote some of the greatest twisted pop songs in the annals of musicdom. big star didn't sell many records, but everyone who bought one started a band.
Wynton - The Only Person in Jazz Who Matters? marsalis is unquestionably a great technician, but has always sounded somewhat clinical and soul-less to me. i also found his classical & operatic stuff like "blood on the field" to be virtually unlistenable. however to suggest that he's "the ...
Another "help me pick speakers" thread you have three criteria--small footprint, near-wall placement and deep bass--which narrows the field considerably. the proacs, for example, are great but need a lot of room to breathe and probably won't work for you. from my experience, rega and f...
PSB Synchrony One or Usher Mini Dancers? acdvd, out of idle curiosity, why would you upgrade from the synch two to the ones? it seems like other than slightly deeper low end, the ones have essentially the same design & drivers and would sound substantially the same (both great speake...
Budget subwoofer that matches Monitor Audio RS1? i still use an energy es-8 in my office system and it does its job well--musical, unobtrusive and clean, without the boominess of lesser products. they're very inexpensive ($100-150) used. however, if i wanted to step up, i'd get a hsu stf (around...
What CD player compares to NAD C545BEE? i've had similar experience with nad sources--they sound quite good when they're working, but don't work consistently. in any event, i'd look at cambridge audio 540/640/550 (which frequently pop up here in the $350-500 range); very neutral, qualit... |
