Vintage Denon Direct Drive Turntable
Treehugga, The weight of all that slate so dwarfs the weight of the DP80 chassis that the latter is irrelevant. The big thing is how to couple the DP80 to all that mass, so it can do some good. Are you going to drill all the way through both layer...

I did, too. It finally worked.

Good answer. I don't really believe there is any one "best" drive system either. Perhaps one may be more cost-effective than another, but that's about it. (Up to say $3000, I think you can beat out most BDs with any of several DDs or idler set-ups...

Hi Peter, What's up with your bearing assembly project? Given the large positive effect that the Kokomo bearing reportedly has on the sound of the Garrard 301, I am waiting with bated breath for your new Lenco bearing.
SOTA Millennia - Comments?
Meantime, doesn't anyone want to beat me up for my comments on the Star Sapphire III and the implication that the Cosmos (moreso than the Millenia, which would be my choice of Sota products) might have a similar sound? This kevlar armor is getting...
Air Tight Supreme compared to PC-1
Siddh, In regards to your question, I have yet to hear an Airtight cartridge at all, on any system let alone my own. As regards J Valin's review, all I can say is that he's done it again. He is a master of the superlative. Altho I am perfectly wil...

I agree with most of what you say. How did you or do you rank the best idler tt you've heard vs the best DD, and what do you think are the qualitative differences? In any case, I am having a lot of fun with vintage TTs these days. That in itself i...

The drop in gain should be "noticeable" but unimportant if your phono preamp has sufficient headroom. If you are right on the edge with 0.6mV, you might not be happy with an 0.4mV output.Albert loves the PC1, as Mike infers.
Turntable Speed
If the Transrotor motor is indeed a DC type, as you suggest above, I don't think that a typical after-market motor controller (e.g., the Walker Audio PMC or the VPI SDS) will help your problem. The ones I know about are made to control AC synchono...
Soundsmith "The Voice"?
Starer, would you care to tell us what other cartridges you have used in your present system, so we know what you are comparing to the Voice? Thanks. I'm interested too.
SOTA Millennia - Comments?
FWIW, I owned a Sota Star Sapphire Series III (with vacuum), which was a product of the original Sota company, for most of the 1990s. Even when I owned it, I had the feeling that the bass response was a little on the "woolly" or muddy side and I c...

Raul, I would like you to listen to a state-of-the-art restored idler tt, e.g., a Garrard 301/401 or a Lenco L75 in a proper plinth, using one of your own tonearms and cartridges. Your opinion of how these tts compare to BDs and DDs in your experi...
Bluebook for used records?
There is a well known catalog, called Goldmine's. Maybe you can find it via Google. I don't know if it lists the very obscure recordings you seem to want to know about, but maybe it does. Estimated values are given for every cut or re-issue of a g...

If you know that the Denon DP80 bearing is sapphire, then you know more than I was ever able to find on the subject, or anyone else here. Thanks. I am going to try to get to visit a slate cutter on Friday. (He has a CNC machine and is just getting...
