Revamp Garrard 301, keep Oracle V or move along?
Nkj, All I can say is, "Gulp!"; your Garrard is gorgeous. Unless you need the money to apply to your next purchase, I would say never sell that. It is as good as money in the bank and may be an appreciating asset. I see above that you like to keep...
Well-Tempered Golf Ball?
I'd have to dig up some of my Columbia 18-holes to play on it.
Platter Upgrade for Garrard 301
I would agree that the Kuzma Stabi Reference is a superb choice. Don't recall the model name of the Lurne' that I once auditioned, but I do think it was an early effort. Anyway, peace be with you.
Platter Upgrade for Garrard 301
Nandric, I get it (finally), you are a big fan of Pierre Lurne' (hope I've spelled it correctly) and his turntable designs, which I think are suspended, belt-drive types. That's fine. In this case, the question of what upgrades work best for the G...
Platter Upgrade for Garrard 301
I feel the same way as Mike. This is a fun adventure that does not really cost much in the long run. Of course, I don't have a Rockport or anything comparable to fall back on. What got me going was the surprising sonics of my Lenco L75 in a custom...
Platter Upgrade for Garrard 301
Logenn, I have to ask, but you don't really have to answer - which plinth did you ultimately buy, the one from Porter or the one from Dobbins? You cleverly omitted to mention that, and I can understand why you might not want to offend either party...
Linn LP-12 still competitive with the very best?
Aguadiem, See Jazzdoc's post way above. If you are really planning on spending all that money to upgrade your Linn, you might want to consider another table entirely, like a Galibier et al. Otherwise, your system is very nice; go for it.
Comments about Nottingham quirks
I can't think of any "quirks", except for having to spin the platter to start the table up. I haven't read the TAS review and probably won't. Can you be more specific?
Vibraplane vs. Minus k for Turntables
Whoops! I see above that sdlevine is an owner of a BM8 and likes it. Moreover, I erred in reporting the performance of the BM8, which is f = 0.5Hz in the vertical plane, as sdlevine says. I will have to struggle with my conscience over purchasing ...
Vibraplane vs. Minus k for Turntables
I had never heard of Minus K, until this thread. So thanks for putting it up. I just went to the Minus K website to check out their prices and specs. Seems like the BM8, which costs less than $3K, would be a good choice for most tt's, which tend t...
Triplanar Problem
Thankfully, Tri can still supply the metal one, originally designed and supplied by Herb Papier, which locates the tonearm via the spindle to pivot distance directly (at least Tri was able to send me one, after I lost mine). That's probably the on...
Triplanar Problem
I think there may be too much play in the lucite jig, especially when the tonearm mounting platform is significantly below the plane of the platter/spindle. Anyway, that seemed to be the source of the inaccuracy of my jig. Sorry if I was redundant...
Triplanar Problem
Doug, you wrote, "2.a. that adjustment beneath the VTA tower was mis-set by the manufacturer or altered by somebody. This is a job for Tri-Mai unless you're feeling brave. There's only one correct position and it's unclear to me (doing this from m...
Vintage Denon Direct Drive Turntable
(1) I have done the thought experiment as regards threading the slate. I don't think it would work. I am not going to try. I think the only choice with slate is to just drill a hole thru and then use a nut and bolt. There IS some appeal to the ide...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
If any former Lenco-Lover has copied Peter's photos showing how he assembles the PTP3, I would be most grateful if they could be pasted in here or in Lenco Heaven. Maybe Peter would re-post them himself. Also, the threads on adjusting, restoring, ...
