Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Back in the days of yore when I briefly owned a Shure V15 Type ??, I did not like it at all. It sounded "gray" and dull to me compared to whatever I compared it to. I am willing to believe that with these different styli it must sound completely d...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Thank Raul. I was skeptical until last week.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Axel, "Slow" is not an adjective I would ever use with respect to the M20FL Super, and I have compared it to a VdH Colibri, perhaps the fastest of the fast. I would say it does have a lot of harmonic bloom that could be heard as "slow"ness, but un...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dean, I am going to listen to the Andante P76 next, so by early next week perhaps I will have another shoot-from-the-hip opinion of the Andante as compared to the M20FL. I think Axel also likes the M20FL, but I don't know what he has compared it t...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Raul, I yield to your superior level of experience. I wonder what causes that phenomenon. Probably the lack of grounding does make the cartridge susceptible to RF or something like that. When you touch it, your whole body acts as an antenna. ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Derek, Lets apply some logic. If you have hiss even when the cartridge is up in the air, not playing an LP, then how could this have anything to do with break-in of the cartridge? I cannot imagine a mechanism. I have to disagree with Raul, if he i...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Derekmur,Re what I wrote above. If to obtain higher gain for LOMC, your phono stage uses an in-built SUT, then do not bother to do the experiment I suggested, i.e., don't plug the Nagaoka into the SUT input. It will sound terrible for many re...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
If it persists even with the cartridge off the platter, then it must reside in your phono stage. Are you using the exact same inputs for both cartridges? Does your phono stage have a built-in SUT in order to obtain enough gain for a LOMC cartridge...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I listened for several more hours yesterday. The M20FL Super never disappointed me; it retained its sonic character on all kinds of LPs, good and bad. At the end of the evening, I compared it to its younger and more expensive brother, the Ortofon ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Sorry to interrupt the discussion of loading. I just inserted the Ortofon M20FL Super into my system, riding in a Dynavector headshell on a DV505 tonearm on my Lenco/PTP/slate plinth tt. It is feeding an Ayre P5Xe set for low gain (47K load), so a...
Help. Wife says Teres 340 Is too bright.
Loading via the Y connector "works" fine, but as you suggest it is not optimal because of the excessive lengths of wire involved. It is even remotely possible that you are picking up RF on your phono stage as a result. That could certainly cause a...
Aluminum or Wood armboard for Technics SP10 Mk2
You might even have one made for you out of slate, for very little money. You would have to drill it yourself, which is messy but do-able. (Lots of dust.) Otherwise, I kind of favor hard woods or a laminate of wood and metal over solid metal. But ...
For Basis TT owners does the VPI SDS work?
A single-phase AC controller would still work to control speed of a synchronous motor. Proof of that is the fact that the Walker and SDS controllers do work with all such motors. But you are correct that a controller that could supply two sine wav...
Classic Audio T1 and T3 field coil loudspeakers
David, Thank you very much for your thoughtful and thorough remarks. No doubt the T1s are something to aspire to, but even at $28K the price is over my head (besides which I would bet those show special units are sold). I AM still interested in th...
Classic Audio T1 and T3 field coil loudspeakers
Too bad that the T1s with all field coil drivers cost ca $50,000, according to Ralph. The T3s with field coils can be had at a much more down to earth price, but are still expensive.
