Lyra or ZYX ?
I own both an RS-A1 and an FR64S. The RS-A1 is really excellent, but it is also a bit crazy in terms of its ergonomics. (You need a steady hand or a shot of cognac.) The FR64S is probably superior for a low compliance cartridge, in terms of both p...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
My pet theory is that the harmonics produced in real time in a live performance are typically not well reproduced in the home, possibly because of microphone placement within the recording venue or possibly for many other reasons. What I mean by t...
Boron Cantilever and Ruby Cantilever, Why Ruby?
All this expertise is less impressive in the internet era than it once might have been. We can all Google. It might be more fun to get back to discussing cantilever materials and their effect on LP reproduction. (I apologize to all for starting th...
Lenco Restorers in the US?
Artisan Fidelity and OMA, but expensive. However, I think the performance potential of an L75 is very high, so the cost of a high end restoration may be justifiable. Also, for parts, "Jeremy" in England. Find his contact info on Lenco Heaven. For ...
Hum, buzz, snap, crackle and pop?
..."is it true that in order to have tubes in the system, there are forms of hum, buzz, snap, crackle and pop during quiet passages? "No. That is complete BS. And there is no need at all to use selected low noise tubes in a well designed circuit, ...
Vinyl Heaven : Lyra Atlas on a Durand Talea 2
The genius of the Telos (besides its merits as a great tonearm) is that it makes the Talea look like a reasonable idea, in terms of cost. You can buy a Talea and still feel good about yourself as a prudent consumer. I am working up to it.
Has anybody tried the Reed 3P?
Dear Nikola, As I recall you asked me whether I wanted you to inquire about Vidimantas' test results using aluminum or carbon fiber arm wands. I did not think it was important enough for you to go to that trouble.I took my cue from the Kenwood L07...
Has anybody tried the Reed 3P?
Dear Nikola, I think Sean and I were talking about the central structure that supports the pivot and is in turn bolted directly to the armboard. When you say "arm pod", do you refer to some other accessory that they manufacture for mounting the to...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
No question that when a particular LP gives a sense of depth and stage location with a particular cartridge in a particular system, there is a lot of serendipity involved. And it certainly has a lot to do with microphone placement and the original...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I am sure you are all nice guys, but this is going nowhere because we are all talking past each other. We are having to take turns denying that what the other inferred about our position is accurate. Yes, I agree that the language of audio is ofte...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Plenty of saxophones in a jazz big band. They generally do sit in front of the trumpet section or the trombones if such are present. I hear big bands live all the time in the DC area; I try not to miss such performances, because I do love the soun...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Larry, Because I disagree with you completely on the subject of "3D". Some systems with some software sources can sometimes deliver an image that has "depth". Sometimes not. I perceive this, so you cannot legislate it out of existence by maki...
Cartridge upgrade for $600
In that price range, I would suggest you consider remaining in the MM or MI domain. Low end MC cartridges are not necessarily going to be superior to any of the better ones. You could just move up the Ortofon line or consider a Sound Smith MI cart...
Boron Cantilever and Ruby Cantilever, Why Ruby?
Sorry, John, and anyone else. I did not check the periodic table or even think hard before calling them heavy metals. My bad. Your point about the relative lack of toxicity of Boron (at least in ionic form) was exactly what I was inferring to begin...
Has anybody tried the Reed 3P?
No need to do that, Nikola.I was merely alluding to the fact that on the website, Vidimantas himself brings up the issue of how different woods sound and also how wood in turn compares to various other materials. He then shows some interesting dat...
