Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Henry, If you tell me how to do it, since the photos are on my desktop, not on the internet, I will post a photo of my "new" 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce. As you may know, I have owned (in the past) just about every model of 356, up to ...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Dear Ct, The copper mat cannot really "damage" the servo permanently. It's just that the servo is operating suboptimally. Excessive platter mass can only damage the bearing in the long run.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
The best cartridge is always the one that got away or that you cannot find at all. There is a reason for this, but if I divulge it you will think I am a cynic.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Raul, Based on Dover's informative post, it would seem that the Karat Nova is that rare beast, a low output MC with rather decent compliance. There is the resemblance to your other (former?) favorite LOMC, the Ortofon 2000. When you first exp...
Goldmund Turntable with T3 arm--what is it worth?
In my opinion, the T3, any version of it, is to be avoided unless you are getting it VERY cheaply and like to play around with gadgets. It is kind of an upscale copy of a Rabco SL8E. Both are Rube Goldberg devices that "work" OK but cannot compete...

DV Karat is good; I know it. But I think the current version is "17D3". Before that there was the 17D2, etc. There is also the Karat "23R", with a Ruby cantilever. (R is for Ruby.) I have never heard the latter, but I am an admirer of the former.B...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Richard and Henry, Well actually Henry has made a change to platter inertia, in the downward direction, by removing the platter mat. I am guessing, based on my DP80, that the Victor OEM platter mat is a rubber one. If it's like the DP80 platter ma...
Trans Fi Salvation direct rim drive turntable
Dear Larry, I have nothing for sale. I had two L07Ds, about 2-3 years ago, and sold one to Radicalsteve (aka Steve) more than a year ago. I hadn't heard from him since, so I am happy to learn that he is happy. I would not part with my one remainin...
Trans Fi Salvation direct rim drive turntable
Thanks, Steve. Most of all, I am glad you like the L07D. I would not be without one; I just did not need two. In the case of the L07D, its stainless steel mat seems to be so well integrated to give a very neutral sound that I would be loathe to su...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Halcro, I am interested in your response re "platter inertia", which is to say, are you using an aftermarket platter mat that adds significant mass?Would be interesting to look at the audio output waveform, to see whether those notches in the peak...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
"Fumigate" means to permeate with fumes. Usually this is done by a professional exterminator. Not a "hit man" but a guy who comes into your home to rid it of pests. Not human pests but pests who are members of other species and genii. When I owned...
Direct drive vs belt vs rim vs idler arm
Dear Dover, I have no issue with anything you say, where it's a matter of opinion. And I believe you are totally honest when you relate to us that there is something about the "sound" of the direct-drive turntables with which you are familiar that...

You are correct about the proper order of drinks. I drank the wine when we were at dinner in a restaurant near to the jazz, and I drank the vodka later while listening to music. (In the US, they make you drink "something"; or else you pay the cove...

Nandric et al, I own not only a used P8 ES but also a van den Hul version. Have you auditioned the latter in your system? Does it have a hope of competing with the creme de la creme? If not, can Axel make it sing?I have just had the revelation (af...
