Turnable database with TimeLine "The Beat [like every other direct-drive turntable] has only one moving part, the bearing." The ad copy is correct; however the inference that this quality is exclusive to the Beat is exaggerated, to say the least. But I really really like the Bea...
Thales Simplicity tonearm review in Stereophile. I finally read Fremer's review. Why does that guy always harp on the notion that the vertical and horizontal effective masses of a tonearm should be equal? Why should they be equal? There is some advantage in having a higher effective mass in the ...
Turnable database with TimeLine Thanks for the great post, Richard. I think of a 3-phase AC synchronous motor is a cousin to a DC motor. In fact, the Victor TT101 does make +/-12VDC in its PS to supply its motor. Likewise, I thought the SP10s used DC motors. But the Denon uses a...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks Banquo,We've never "pulled" the motor, and so far as I can tell by inspection, no one has ever messed with the screw that allows access to the bearing thrust plate. But when you say the motor rests on washers, I have to think. As you know, the ele...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks Banquo, It is certainly true that the noise I hear is not "obviously" due to bearing friction, so I am open-minded as to other causes. But I did inspect the spacing around the platter, between the edge of the platter and the escutcheon, and I did ...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks I am hearing a noise from my TT101, but only at 45 rpm. It is silent at 33 rpm. It's an irregular regular pulsation that could be bearing friction, and in the absence of any other good ideas, I assume it IS bearing friction. I am planning to unscr...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks Dear Hiho, I stand corrected. I am in fact aware of the business, Top Class Audio. But still…The big issue with these turntables is the integrated circuits that were used here and there. ICs come and go over time, and once they're gone from produc...
Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer V Fozgometer Don and Bif, There were so many reports on this forum of odd results with the Fozgometer that I have never purchased one or even tried one out in my system. I am sure that some of those reported problems were due to misapplication of the instrumen...
Turnable database with TimeLine ALL direct-drive turntables have a "motor controller" of one form or another, built in to the servo circuit. I suppose it is possible that a DD turntable could benefit from a standard AC regenerator, like a PS Audio power source, but such a device...
Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer V Fozgometer Don, You seem to assume that "correct" azimuth is always equal to the condition where the top surface of the cartridge body is parallel to the LP surface. Not so. Your bubble level will only be "right" for some cartridges; most are not perfectly c...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks That post has been re-posted ad nauseam and influenced many to fear owning these turntables. The situation is far from being as bleak as it is described. I even suspect that the quoted dealer in Hong Kong may have had another agenda, like selling ...
Whest Titan phonostage I cannot supply any insight into Whest products, except to say that I find their website to be very opaque as regards their design philosophy. But I do wonder whether any Whest user has also auditioned one of the later Klyne phono stages or full f...
TT-101 turntables…or any DD decks Solid state diodes won't burn out, and even if they did fail, they are very replaceable with modern superior diodes. I know of no reason not to do as you suggest, but I have never tried it, because some of my tt's go for many months without being ...
speed stability The PS Audio devices are limited in their capacity to alter AC frequency. They were designed to supply regenerated power for any audio gear. However, if your tt is running at correct speed direct off the PS Audio, there may be little to gain by in...
Poor sounding analog? Suffice to say that if your LPs do not compete with your digital, something is amiss, assuming the LPs were of good quality to begin with; not necessarily perfect, just good should at least equal or beat your digital sources. |
