Tonearm mount to the plinth vs arm board vs rotating arm board vs isolated tower
I've heard the Doehmann Helix in a system with which I am very familiar.  It indeed seems to be a fabulous turntable, perhaps the best belt-drive I have ever heard.  My friend has since sold it because he needs to downsize and decided to go all di...
Tonearm mount to the plinth vs arm board vs rotating arm board vs isolated tower
When I was building slate plinths for various of my turntables, I adopted the practice of not creating any tonearm mounting boards or accommodating for them.  I therefore had to limit myself to surface mount tonearms, like Chakster says. These inc...
How much difference do lower mass cartridge clips make in playback?
Copper clips are unlikely to be pure copper. Also especially silver clips are very unlikely to be pure silver, because both of these metals would be a poor choice for maintaining a tight grip on the cartridge pins. Most cartridge clips are problem...
What is tour opinion on the Aesthetix Rhea signature and the Calypso signature
Tablejockey, If you’re outside, just stay 6 ft away from other people, masked or not masked. If you’re inside which should mostly be for buying groceries the store should have a policy requiring a mask, although what some people wear is a joke. I’...
What is tour opinion on the Aesthetix Rhea signature and the Calypso signature
I used to own a plain Janus, not a Signture version.  It was "meh".  Then I upgraded all the film caps, using VCaps for coupling and some very fine polystyrene film and foil caps to replace those bundles of 2uF caps.  Wow, that made a great improv...
Not much talk about Yamaha turntables.
Vac, If you are asking where I saw a nice used Yamaha GT 2000L most recently , it was at Audio Union in Ochanomizu. I buy LPs across the street at Disc Union. Our son lives in Tokyo as a permanent resident, and we visit him at least once a year. B...
Add cartridge to current lineup
The Trumpet would be my choice over the GCPH, if it has any linestage capability; I cannot recall for sure.  Find yourself a nice high output MM or MI cartridge, and you will have a nice vinyl rig.  I am rather surprised Chakster has not already p...
Audiophile Albums....Yes indeed
In what way is the NYT article a joke?I wouldn't by either a Hot Stamper or on of the new British LPs, but if it came down to it, I'd go for the brand new British pressing, if I could verify that the master tape had not deteriorated a priori.  And...
Not much talk about Yamaha turntables.
FWIW, the story behind the name "GT2000" is that Toyota had then recently introduced their top of the line sportscar (which is now a VERY valuable collector item), which they called the "2000GT", because it had a 2-liter motor and was a GT car (2 ...
Not much talk about Yamaha turntables.
A nice GT2000X will be about double the cost of a GT2000 or 2000L.  The X version is rare and very desireable, about $4k to $5K, last time I looked.  Has bigger motor and heavier platter and better standard tonearm, compared to the GT2000, plus an...
Not much talk about Yamaha turntables.
Chakster, Have you ever heard a GT2000 or an L version (or an X version)? These are very highly regarded turntables with coreless motors. In fact, on the current market, a very nice GT2000 or any of the variants will cost more than a DP80. I’ve se...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
I guess I will use it to inflate a balloon, so I can float over to Germany to hear Eckard's systems.
What does a tonearm contribute to the sound of a turntable?
The wire is probably fine, but Reed tonearms have a lot more going for them besides good wire.  Otherwise, we could all buy FireWire and use it to re-wire some el cheapo tonearm.  (Another owner of a Reed tonearm with cryo-treated FireWire here.)
Ikeda IT-407 tonearm geometry
In favor of not taking this business too seriously, for me, is the fact that the papers on alignment were mostly formulated and published in the late 1930s.  I think the Baerwald/Lofgren dates to 1941.  Not that the rules of geometry have changed ...
Ikeda IT-407 tonearm geometry
With FR64S or fx, optimal P2S if you want to use Baerwald is 231.5 and indeed in that case cartridge will be twisted inward with respect to long axis of headshell. So probably the same applies to Ikeda which was also designed for Stevenson.
