New here and saying HI! I noticed you chose as your moniker one of the best drivers ever. I really like what he said later in his life about the difference between when he drove and more modern racing: "I remember when the drivers were fat and the tires were skinny."
New here and saying HI! Welcome, are you a formula 1 fan?
Killer vintage 70's, 80's reel to reel to add to my setup. Teac/Tascam made some nice semi-pro machines that go for not that much money. Also, I think some Pioneer machines sounded pretty good, although their compact size did not allow for use of 10.5” NAB reels.
Killer vintage 70's, 80's reel to reel to add to my setup. The Technics RS1500 and the like, and Otari 5050 would be good choices. A friend who reconditions machines like both of these for being rugged and maintainable (particularly the Otari). The only potential issue with something like the Otari is t...
Update on Production of Western Electric Tubes Decent choices, even if they are not Vintage WE tube types. I particularly like the choice of 6L6, but the WE near equivalent- 350B- would be even better.
Opportunity to buy Demo Magico M2? You likely would never get a dealer to agree to an in-home audition, but you may be able to negotiate ahead of purchase the terms for any return if you are not happy. Obviously, the terms would have to make it worthwhile for the dealer to go thro...
Any tricks to remove drivers from a (sticky) cabinet I know you were kidding. I did like the idea, but, I just thought it was an opportunity to again push the safest way to do this. I saw the result of an "accident" at a dealership where the driver was being pulled from a $30,000 pair of speakers ...
Any tricks to remove drivers from a (sticky) cabinet The show will see would be the driver cones popping off the speaker frame. It is fairly easy to use the screw method with vise grips an a piece of wood as a fulcrum, and there is very little chance of damage if you have someone to hold the wood i...
Opportunity to buy Demo Magico M2? I very much doubt that break in is an issue, particularly at 250 hours. It is much more likely a set up issue at the dealership, including a difference in personal preference between you and the dealer. Of course it could be you don’t like the s...
Any tricks to remove drivers from a (sticky) cabinet This video shows a good way to remove woofers from the front: One way to make this slightly easier is to heat the speaker just a bit with a heat gun, but, I think the approach shown in the video is really the safest. You have to find the ...
Is SUT needed for a low output cartridge with a Gryphon Pandora & Legato phono module? I know that the common wisdom is that a component is not suppose to impart its own sound ("straight wire with gain"), but, all you have to do is careful listening to know that they all do impart a signature so that part of the game is finding stuf...
Is SUT needed for a low output cartridge with a Gryphon Pandora & Legato phono module? With 68 db of gain, you certainly don't need a SUT. I would personally recommend just sticking with using the high gain MC input of the Gryphon. But, I would not make the blanket statement that this will always be superior to using a SUT and the...
Does remote control degrade the sound of tube preamps? Yes there are MANY ways to employ both manual and remote volume control. One of the most interesting is the EMIA approach of using an auto-former with many discrete taps that are relay switched. I believe there are other transformer-based volume...
Does remote control degrade the sound of tube preamps? Yes, $600 to $1,000 IS a lot to spend on a volume control component. But, it is one of the most important piece in the signal chain and can seriously degrade the signal and/or cause channel imbalances if the left and right channels do not track p...
Does remote control degrade the sound of tube preamps? To be clear, adding remote control functionality to volume control does not degrade sound, but, if providing that feature means cost cutting on some other aspect of product, that could hurt the sound quality. If providing remote volume control me... |
