Killer vintage 70's, 80's reel to reel to add to my setup.
THE “new” machines that I like come from United Home Audio.  The top machine utilizes a reconditioned Tascam transport and electronics that are designed and built by them to be the very best; it better be good because it costs in excess of $90k.  ...
New 55,000 Euro tonearm
I don’t know what can be gleaned from the specific design, but, I don’t think the location of the pivot and counterweight is an issue, even from a theoretical perspective.  The supposed “ideal” is neutral balance, which is the center of gravity be...
New 55,000 Euro tonearm
A $407 tonearm, what's the big deal?  Oh, Euros, not Yen.  Nevermind.  That arm is made for their quarter million dollar table, so it doesn't seem THAT out of line.  I hope a prospective buyer can find a way to stabilize the table enough to work i...

Any model Studer that has been properly reconditioned will probably cost more than your budget.  But, the same company made Revox machines that were intended to be non-studio machines that are nice and much cheaper.  Look for an A 700 or A77 or B7...
Most Realistic Recordings
I am also a fan of Sheffield, M&K, Telarc, Chesky, Clarity, Three Blind Mice, Proprius, Astree, etc.  They do great jobs engineering, recording and mastering.  But, there are plenty of examples of "ordinary" records with extraordinary sound.  ...
Buffer amp no gain
I don't think the number of steps in an attenuator is a particular problem, when it is a matter of relays switching in different resistors.  How does it hurt to have more steps?  A Levinson No. 32 preamp I owned had much more steps than that (.1 d...
Buffer amp no gain
A local dealership that sells only tube electronics (some made in-house) sells an in-line transformer buffer.  I did not need it, but, I did get to hear what it does.  It makes the sound seem more "open" and expansive (more enveloping soundstage),...

You can find a lot of these recommended machines, including Studer A807, 810 and 80 machines on the Reverb site.  They do not sell things for cheap prices, but, they are generally fair.  It is worth window shopping there. I don't know if I would ...

Something to play around with, that would be the proper role of a R2R machine if you did not already have a substantial collection of tapes.  A bit more of a hassle than a cassette machine, nut certainly nicer to look at in operation.

I agree with mijostyn that reel to reel is generally NOT the way to go from a sound perspective.  Yes, there are great sounding tapes out there (I've heard a few), but, the pursuit of a reel to reel system can only be justified sonically in an ext...
Buffer amp no gain
Erik, The problem with most transformer volume controls was the limited number of volume steps—the right volume seemed to always be between adjacent steps.  The are some nice ones offered my MyEmia (autoformer) that has many steps and remotely co...
Buffer amp no gain
The unity gain "buffer" that I like involves the use of transformers.  I've heard a few and liked how they remove hard and artificial sounding "edginess"  without sounding murky or dynamically dull.  The attached is a discussion of the subject: ...
Suggest one obsure album we all should hear
I an also a big fan of Braden’s “Thimar” album.
Opportunity to buy Demo Magico M2?
I haven’t been there in a while, but, I liked the people there.  None of these stores employ hard sell tactics so a visit is always pleasurable.     I went to Command today to pick up a new backed up hard drive for my server.  While I was there I...
Opportunity to buy Demo Magico M2?
Perhaps you could visit the Washington DC area and audition gear at Command Audio and Video.  They carry Rockport, Magico, Focal and Devore speakers, and their electronics include Gryphon.   And if you do go there, you are also less than 15 minut...
