Perhaps the most annoying myth in audio of 2025? Talking about Loudness! I tend to agree with @carlsbad2. If your system does not sound good at a reasonably low volume level, it needs work. Fortunately, the work doesn’t need to be substantial, and you don’t need high-sensitivity speakers to achieve that. In my rooms, ...
Should I use Impedance 4 or 8? As you know, that lower-imp. tap is reserved for A+B, speakers connected in parallel or the speaker with lower nominal impedance. A good, issue-free amplifier should not deliver drastically different performance between two taps. When connected to...
Balanced vs RCA preamps You have to be careful about things you read like the specs above! I own the two of the Topping DACs; The 40 Ohm value is actually the two 20 Ohm output impedances put in series when really they should be in parallel, which would be about 10 Ohms...
LoFi @cdc In today’s market, you could easily find a low-end yet at least mid-fi combo with your eyes closed (but mind open). You could do RC+PEQ with it. Huge SS and alot fun. Wiim Pro+ -> Fosi v3 -> Sony SSCS5 for $350.
LoFi I strongly suggest that you stick with lo-fi to avoid any dissatisfaction when switching back to hi-fi. Like my son (no kidding), who enjoys lofi much better and care less about hifi. My best half also enjoys WQXR better than anything else. I am t...
Balanced vs RCA preamps @atmasphere Usually XLR outputs have considerably lower output impedance than RCA outputs. Where did you get this from? Have you done your homework before taking 10 seconds to write this? Let me do some homework for you, and you can do the rest...
Network DAC suggestions? Wiim Pro? ... For near-field listening room correction is certainly irrelevant. I think wiim mini might just be fine.
Directional wires/cables Several of my cables are directional, and although I cannot hear the difference, I follow the instructed direction. For unmarked cables, I use an ad-hoc approach, ensuring that the label aligns with the flow of electrons. I believe in it—why not? ...
LAIV Harmony He (Weng) also added that by adding the DDC I might hear very subtle improvements but not noticeable. Most audiophiles here claim they hear a significant improvement from adding a DDC. Do they have better ears than audio engineers, are they exa...
Streamer Recommendations Music --> PC --> cloud --> ipad --> streamer --> amp/speaker/sw ?? WHY ?? when you could just do Music --> external ssd (galvanic isolated USB) --> streamer --> amp/speaker/sw much cleaner, less noise, shorter signal pat...
Network DAC suggestions? Wiim Pro? ... OP, RC referred here is room correction.
Network DAC suggestions? Wiim Pro? ... If you need RC/PEQ, go with Wiim, but definitely get a good external DAC because their internal DAC leaves much to be desired. If you have a Topping D50 and it’s the original version, consider upgrading it— for example the D50 III is much better. ...
Balanced vs RCA preamps I always use an XLR connection because, in my experience, the sound is better (with volume matched) than the unbalanced outputs. If the design is truly balanced, the higher output level from XLR can generally contribute to better sound (again, wh...
Dumb question......why do you need a preamp? You really don't. In recent years, DACs or streamer/DAC combos have now included high-quality preamp stages while remaining affordable. You can connect them directly to the amp. You just need to do your due diligence to find the right one.
Impedance - The most ignored and useful measurement tool So I emailed Mr. John Atkinson regarding what exactly the fomula they have used in Stereophile for reporting the EPDR. He kindly repsond promptly as follows: I use a formula created by editor Jim Austin. after importing the Impedance magnitude a... |
