Beolab 5 - Four Questionable Technologies
There was a review on this speaker a couple years ago - I forget which magazine, but I recall it as being reasonably positive.Technologies 2 and 3 in your list are reasonably well established. Several manufacturers have included #2 in their speake...
Feds to audiophiles: You're all pirates now
Rewind a few decades. What is the view on Big Music "out positioning", to put it politely, countless musicians who later realized they didn't have the rights to the music they created, and then watched others get rich off of those rights? And cont...
PC based music server from TAS
I have my whole library on a dedicated PC-based music server and do the vast majority of my listening from it. I have it set up to output "raw" S/PDIF out to an external DAC. It sounds fantastic. I might just be ignorant of the other levels that f...
Feds to audiophiles: You're all pirates now
Some really good posts in this thread! These threads always seem to go down the same path - discussing the ethics, the laws, and the impact of file sharing. And while I agree that there is often a lot of "convenient" logic people use to justify the...

wireless/USB audio to receiver
That's cool - I've been wondering how long it would take for the hardware manufacturers to start making gear that is computer / network "aware". It seems like it has really hit stride in 2007. I owned a Denon receiver in the past, and it's very ni...
Zune output vs. CD output
I didn't read carefully enough - I read docked, and I assumed a docking mechanism similar to the plethora you see for iPods. The little 1/8" mini plug is far from ideal, I'm sure, as a connector. Still, with lossless recordings, my guess would be ...
Zune output vs. CD output
Lossless encoding would sound nearly identical, and my guess would be that, on a second system of modest proportions, 320kb/sec encoding would sound great. And you'd have a lot of fun with it. Don't see how you could go wrong.
How many hours weekly do you listen to your system
15-20, with varying degrees of focus on the music specifically.
Krell KAV-400xi vs KAV-150a vs Outlaw Audio vs ?
You probably answered your own question already - you were awestruck by the KAV-400xi. If those are your three choices, the 400 is the one you're going to be happiest with.Domestic tranquility certainly has value, but if you've put together and us...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
That's a good point - many of the other pursuits carry the notion that the thing being purchased will appreciate in value. I think we're all subject to justifying to ourselves our purchases, and the notion that one is buying something that will ap...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
Enjoyed your post, Leedistad, but I don't agree with your point about asking this question being akin to asking why more people aren't into model trains. Playing back / listening to music is an almost universal experience, and the fact that such a...
Digital Out vs. USB
Yes, you can set the digital output on a sound card to be "direct", which should be bit-for-bit the data stream that is in the FLAC file.
Pet audiophile peeves - name yours
Granting audio rags and their reviews any status higher than "entertainment".Any use of the word "mid-fi"
does anyone sharpie thier CD's???
Doesn't the color of the Sharpie have to be green? Has this technology advanced to the point that any color Sharpie works?
