Still happily using vintage gear?
I have a collection of vintage components, but the oldest (and Best) is a Scott LK-150 tube power amp (1961-1964). It’s been updated, respectfully, but not modified. It’s dead silent (unless it’s playing music, lol), works perfectly, looks awesome...
Audiophile Priorities and Recent Topics
Late to this thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned, but the number of posts a member has made, or the length of time a person has been a member of Audiogon does not necessarily show whether that person is, or is not a “newbie”. It is pos...
Tube vendors.
@wolf_garcia … sorry, a tiny bit off topic, but have you tried other tubes in your Freya? If so, which, and from whom (back on topic..)?
Tube vendors.
I’ve been most impressed by Andy Bouwman at Vintage Tube Services. Very knowledgeable, and really cares about fitting you with the right tube for your equipment. That said.. I also get tubes from RAM tubes… and only from them for my Music Referenc...
Old Amps that can still Kick Butt
I also have a Scott Lk-150, and it is a special amplifier. It’s my “back up”, but I’ve tried it in my main system in place of a very well respected, current model amp, and it competes very well. I actually prefer it with some music. I took it with...
How loud are you typically listening?
I’ve been reading this thread with interest. I’ve wondered at what volume level typical Audiogon forum members listen to their music. In reading these responses, it’s clear that many of us are in a similar ‘range’, but there are definitely some wh...
Newbie Can't Decide Which Tube Amp
Ok, sorry to butt in, since this post is written primarily to address the comments about needing “this or that” number of watts of power for the OP’s 87/88 dB speakers, but I just want to share my personal experience, and remind everyone (because ...
Desire to try tubes
The recommendations for vintage gear are good ones. That’s what came to my mind first when I read your post. I’ve had several ‘58-‘61 Scott (& vintage Fisher and Dynaco, etc.) units, and they were all excellent! The best integrated (IMO) was t...
Are there any tube amps that don't give off any---
I’m using a Music Reference RM-10 in one of my systems. It uses EL84 output tubes, and puts out very little heat, less than any tube amp I’ve ever owned, and less than many SS amps I’ve owned as well. It’s small, light, and sounds great.
Tweaks you got rid of because they were not effective (enough)?
“..down there with..” Hahaha. Ohhhhh boy..!
Tweaks you got rid of because they were not effective (enough)?
Hahaha. Yeah, well, as I said.. I’m willing to try things out! I’ve not been constantly trying tweaks... just when I get an itch. Some I leave in place if I like the way it looks (eg.. wood platforms). I love It when I discover something free, or ...
Tweaks you got rid of because they were not effective (enough)?
Great thread, great subject! I’ve tried numerous tweaks over the past 35 years.. there seems to be a tweak “epiphany” every several years.. and have I’ve found, to ME, in my systems, nothing that has made a difference in sound that has compared to...
Maggies to Tekton?
I’d like to back up what wester17 wrote about the small tweaks for the 1.7s. I installed a fuse bypass kit (in over 30 years if using Magnepan speakers I’ve only blown one fuse and it was my fault), silver jumpers, and Sound Anchors stands. These ...
Maggies to Tekton?
I’m a little late to this party, but I have some experience here... I’ve owned Maggies (5 different models) for the past 33 years. I’ve also, concurrently, owned many other “traditional” speakers... including Tekton. There’s just something about t...
For anyone who moved from tubes to solid state — a question
This may not *exactly* answer the question, but I thought it was relevant to the spirit of the conversation: I’ve used and owned dozens of different amplifiers (tube, ss, and hybrid) with a variety of speakers over the years. My primary speakers h...
