What can $300 do?
The Energy C-1 is a very nice bookshelf speaker. You might want to look into Tannoy's as well.(One dealer, Audiobreakthroughs, has very good deals on new/demo speakers. Look @ the classified ads.) Also, there are the "Castle" bookshelf speakers to...
Equipment found at the dump
Nothing like visiting the dump. (Brings back memories of my little Nissan 1/2 ton pick-ups loaded down w/tons of stuff.) However, the dump where I used to live was very stringent about not allowing anything taken out. Haven't been as fortunate as ...
what are some decent starter am/fm tuners ?
If you don't mind giving up the convenience of a remote control and have available space, the older tuners can be bought for a very reasonable cost. The drawback to these tuners is that you have to spin the flywheel to tune-in a station. A digital...
What is your best kept secret in mid-fi?
Newer is not necessary better. There is nothing wrong w/older technology. Especially true w/tuners. Good sound can be had for very little $. Recently been shopping on "E-bay" and have bought excellent older equipment for cents on the dollar. Most ...
Where do I start?
I bought a used Music Hall MMF-5 turnable about a year ago and I'm very pleased w/it. Has a nice cart. standard and offers very good isolation. Added a little Project (Sumiko) phono pre-amp and it works wonderful. I like the fact it is always powe...
Help Troubleshoot - Left Ch. Louder than Right Ch.
Your source equipment could also be the cause. Also, the loudspeaker.(Depends on how close of a tolerance the manufacturer used w/ the drivers.)
Snell kIIs - LOST All my imaging - help
You might want to look into larger speakers like some Snell E/III's or larger. Your ears have become accustomed to the sound in your old room, which sounds to me were best suited to your smaller K/II's. Your new room needs a larger spk. me thinks....
Good marrige, DENON 3803 and KEF Q1
Brownie, the "beaks" fit perfectly next to the hump of the Q1's. I owned the Q 1's and I noticed a big improvement sound wise w/ the beaks in place. The degree to which these work is dependent on the speaker. These do work very well w/the Kef Q1. ...
Good Sounding Inexpensive Phono Preamp?
I would go w/the Sumiko. Sounds excellent and is always powered up for optimal performance.
Neither laid-back nor refined.
I would also add these things to my list to consider when buying a CDP. Namely, (1)How well does it track (and prevent skipping) (2) Will it play a CDR,(3) Customer service after the sale,(4)warranty(if buying new). I've only heard the older NAD/R...
Good marrige, DENON 3803 and KEF Q1
Totem "Beaks" are beautifully matched aluminum anti-resonance devices which you put on top of your loudspeakers.I owned the Q1's for a time and I noticed improved sound quality when I placed these on top. They retail for around $100 so I would try...
Good marrige, DENON 3803 and KEF Q1
If you want to elevate the performance of the Q 1's try some of the Totem's "beaks." Glad you're happy.
Suggestions for Spendor 3/5
I would consider the Marantz PM-17 and the MFD "Mistral" as well as the previous mentioned choices. I think the Naim for the $ is over-rated. Plus you're limited on interconnect choices because of their connectors. Very nice spks!
Loudspeakers that match well w/Bryston B-60?
Final post on where things stand. Sold the Bryston. I found it to be of very high quality, but, I did not find the int. amp to be all that musical/magical, especially considering the $$$. (I probably never found the right combination.) Found a min...
2-Way Floorstander, $1500
If you're able to find a used pair of Snell E/III's around $500 or less, buy them. Beautiful sounding/looking spkrs. Choice of wood veneers as well. (The J/III and IV sound good as well, but not as good as the E/III. Excellent spks. at a very reas...
