Spendor S8e, Dynaudio Focus 220, VA Grand Mozart
After thinking about this some more and given your musical preferences, going over the reviews of the other speakers, and noting that your Anthem amp nearly doubles output to into 4 ohms, I think you should go with the Dynaudios. They will stride ...
Power Cord Question
Agree with all your points. I have done many things to my system and was happy with myself at first because I could hear a difference, but later on decided it was not a "good" difference and reversed the change or changed things again in a differe...
Bookshelf speaker suggestions for Office
Here is information from a previous post about new turntables, but these models or their previous editions are often available used for less money.http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?ymisc&1217893760&openflup&2&4#2Here is a rea...
Spendor S8e, Dynaudio Focus 220, VA Grand Mozart
Since I am at a loss for words right now, here are some comments from Michael Fremer of Stereophile Magazine regarding the Mozart's bigger brother, the Beethoven Concert Grand. I have listened to both, and suggest the Beethoven just sounds bigger,...

Other way around. IMO the Spender is more colored, not in a bad way, but perhaps a bit overly glorious - like a tubed speaker. The VA on the other hand is a very neutral but terrific sounding speaker through the whole frequency spectrum.
Small room, "budget priced" speaker advice, please
My guess, the XLO will be fine and probably similar to the Audio Quest Coral.JPS is a great company. I think the Ultraconductors will provide a more sophisticated and airier upper end but will sacrifice some of the bass response you would get with...
upgrade or all new?
Typically NAD has been all about delivering the best possible sound for the least possible money. As a result, they are not built all that tough and I think you are taking a risk that a used component might fail before perhaps another brand. There...
upgrade or all new?
Don in Tennessee,Jb8312 has some good advice. I would improve your system one piece at a time, listening to and enjoying the new piece until you yearn for something new. I tend to think you want to start with the source first for two reasons:1. yo...
Power Cord Question
Darkkeys,To answer your last question first. Yes, I think it is fine to use a grounded power cord with your two prong ungrounded IEC outlet from your electronic equipment. The Onkyo is a fine CD player and probably provides a significant boost in q...

My two cents.I really like all three of these speakers. You mentioned the Totem Forest too, and that is also one of my favorites.Totem Forest: Great bass for moderately sized two way speaker. Terrific spatial images. Can be a little splashy in the ...
Lossless Downloads
iTunes does have a higher resolution format, but it is not available for their whole library. Look for "iTunes Plus" designation at the bottom of the selection description in the catalog. You can also select to view an "iTunes Plus" only version o...
Any new ideas on an old theme?
Blindjim,FWIW, I don't have any spikes anywhere in my system. My problem had to do with muddy bass that affected the overall sound. The bamboo boards under the speakers with a little blutack between them made a huge positive difference with that p...
Any new ideas on an old theme?
Timrhu said:"Very interesting discussion here. If you use the wood pedestal under the speakers is it best to simply lay it on the carpet or would it be better to spike the wood block to the floor? I think I may try it this weekend."I have a rather...
Any new ideas on an old theme?
I am closer to Shadorne on this one - in part because I haven't tried the spend-ier route prescribed by Fafafion. I have had great luck using bamboo (very dense) boards between the floor and the speakers, and four dots of blutack between the the s...
Tone controls- to use or not?
The simple answer is if it sounds better to you, use the tone control. Unfortunately, if hearing is nearly gone in a particular frequency, it is difficult to compensate with a simple tone control without over emphasizing the lower treble frequenci...
