How long should high quality speakers last?
It really depends on the speakers.  Foam surrounds can rot after 20 years or so. Mine have butyl surrounds and are 35 years old. 5 years ago I refreshed the ferro fluid in the tweeters. They’re as good as new...maybe better because the caps and w...
Which tubes to buy
The Tung Sol KT120s have a good reputation.
Comparing speakers at home questions
You already know your current speakers well, where they sound best, and that has an influence on what your current reference is. It often takes a while to pick up on subtle differences and nuances, and to determine where a different pair of speake...
Who has kids that are in a band or have been?
Cool video! Most of my kids were involved with music at some level. My oldest son has been in a couple of local bands, and it was always fun to go out and hear them, but in the overall scheme of things, they were nothing special beyond their loya...
Are Merlin TSM speakers buried with their owners?
R.I.P. Bobby...miss you.  It will be 10 years this summer... Same here.  I was extremely sad to hear he was gone.  He was a very bright, charismatic, and passionate guy.
Is this a subwoofer issue or just

Are Merlin TSM speakers buried with their owners?
Never had the pleasure of hearing the TSM or VSM, but have had the older model 2B, 3B+, and 4B. My son still runs 3B+ with his B&K amp. There won't be any new ones....even if you move on to something else, I'd still hold on to them.
Upgrading specific components in a tube amplifier
From pics I can find on line, the Yamamoto VT-52 amp has some impressive parts quality underneath compared to most.  Not saying nothing can be improved, or that you won't like the sound of some different parts better, but it already appears to be ...
I am sad
Have you tried calling?  Sometimes emails go to a spam folder.
Upgrading specific components in a tube amplifier
Upgrading parts can certainly be worthwhile, and can be audible, but what you prefer is always subjective. Be aware that some caps take some time to burn in, and don’t always sound better immediately. For me, recent mods started with adding a VTA...
Talk me out of buying Monoblocks and into a stereo amp instead
Far be it from me to talk you out of doing something good for your system. Monoblocks have some advantages. The physical separation of monoblocks offers some SQ benefits. A stereo amp circuit in a single chassis has more crosstalk, usually shares ...

If Bi-Wiring is an option, should I choose Bi-wiring over single banana with free jumpers
Bi-wiring is a hotly contested discussion.  My opinion is that the free jumpers are junk, so at the very least I'd opt for some better DIY jumpers made from better OFC copper wire and decent connectors, whether spade or banana.  If you're not oppo...
Why did you purchase the equipment you have and what do you like most about it?
For me it was being in the right place and right time on a few occasions...I just sort of stumbled onto a good path early on, and things evolved from there. After getting my feet wet with a typical receiver, and an above average pair of a Mariah L...
I’m considering upgrading my speakers internal wiring
Asking the designer for his thoughts seems prudent if it’s an option. There may be more to the internal wire than meets the eye. Most speakers use fairly pedestrian internal wire, and normally I’m all for parts upgrades, but in this case, I’m not...
