People complain about lack of bass, not enough mid range. Solution?
@botrytis When I have talked to SEVERAL speaker designers, most stated that bi-amping does nothing. I’ve seen others state they’ve read the same thing, so they end up not trying, which is a shame, because IME it’s not true. Since everyone’s s...
People complain about lack of bass, not enough mid range. Solution?
There seems to be a fair amount of confusion and conflicting info about bi-amping, so I suspect that some folks are hesitant to even try. Every situation is different, and one size fits all does not apply. Bi-amping can applied in many different w...
Some thoughts on ASR and the reviews
I view ASR as analogous to putting wine through an analyzer and rating it based on the results.  Humans and machines just don't perceive sound the same way.   Data makes for a great starting point.  Ears and years take over from there. 😎
Am I right for this forum?
@snilf  And a correction, by the way. As my overlong narrative concludes, $4,000 is a more accurate estimate of what I paid for the components in my system than $3,000. I guess I should read my own words more carefully.  Sand bagging by over 3...
ribbons vs domes and sibilance
@stuartk ...and far too often I’ve read or watched a review of gear that sounded promising only to be disappointed at the end by the disclosure that the product is "somewhat forward". This seems to be a very common refrain, these days. Do most ...
ribbons vs domes and sibilance
A driver’s inherent traits are only one aspect of it’s end performance. As mentioned by at least of couple of folks, how something is implemented is critically important. So everything "depends". There are pros and cons with every single choice. ...

Cost is not a great indicator of sound quality, and sound quality is highly subjective. It sounds like you’ve been around plenty of true high end sound, and know what music sounds like, so you have some advantages that many don’t even realize they...
I see the issue with ABX blind testing
Everyone and every situation is different. It generally takes me a while to notice the smaller differences... like those in cables. A couple of weeks (or more) is not unusual for me, but it helps overcome day to day variables like my mood, any sup...
Subwoofer Out VS Subwoofer Crossover
...I run main speakers full range and set the sub crossover to 40hz. Connection goes from amp high level output to speakers then to sub high level input. This way you pick up the same characteristic tonality and dynamics of the amp. This is how...
Is positive reinforcement why things are sounding better?
As long as its all in your head every time you listen, it’s all good.... 😎
Heavy speakers: How to be able to reposition?
I used to own a huge pair of Merlin 4s that were tall and over 200#.  Unless you're moving them across the room, I'd just lean them a little and walk them on the corners a few inches at a time.

The receiver was my intro to HiFi! What say you?
My first stereo included a used Technics SA-500 bought in 1982, and mated to a fairly respectable used pair of Mariah LS-2 speakers.  That receiver looked cool, but I never thought it sounded like anything special....not a bad start though.
Posting images triggers "You have been blocked by Audiogon" page
Can anyone tell me how to post pics in the Systems section? There’s a message that I have to post at least one image to make it available on the home page, but I haven’t been able to crack the code. I’m using Chrome as a browser, and importing the...
Going Tubing
I started with a Lazarus tube preamp hooked up to my solid state Distech LS-2 amplifier.  It was a nice combo and improvement over my Hafler preamp, but once I added a refreshed Dynaco 70, followed by the VTA mods on the Dynacos later on, it was a...
