Double down, good or bad?
in the case of the B&W 802 you need to have 3 db more power into the 4 ohm woofer load as you do into the mids and highs because the woofers are 3 db less efficient. I am ignoring the effects of feedback here and doubtless there are amps that ...
Double down, good or bad?
No offense, but the whole "doubling down" discussion wins my award for the Most Useless Bit Of Armchair Technical Analysis . . . or the Most Misconstrewed Measurement Comparison . . . something that really shouldn't be paid hardly any attention to...
PCM to DSD Anyone doing this?
Well, virtually everybody who reads these forums is doing this - the generic conversion process from PCM to DSD is that of a sigma-delta (a.k.a. delta-sigma) modulator, and there are very, very few DAC ICs available anymore that don't use this pro...
The Hub: The most influential amp ever?
Bill, thanks for your writeup on the Marantz units -- they're close to my heart . . . both my posted systems feature Model 2s, and I've owned 1s, 8s, and 9s in the past; truly inspirational stuff.A quick response to your comment on the internal wi...
What's the best way to get HD movies "on demand"
Absolute best? Kaleidescape system loaded with a bunch of DVDs, with upcoming Blu-Ray support. Cheapest? Definately not . . . like everything in life.
Is 75 ohm IC OK from AVR to subwoofer?
I agree with Kal and Al, especially with a high-quality baseband video or digital interconnect. However, if "75-ohm" means common CATV RG6 with crimped-on ends, then yes, this can very commonly be problematic . . . but this is not because of its 7...
Seismometer on iPhone
Nice find Sidssp, thanks.
Speakers for bad rock recordings
Another unorthodox (in 'audiophile' circles) suggestion: B&O Beolab Penta, an early pair (Penta I) can probably be had for your budget. I've owned a couple of different pairs and lived with them in apartments . . . and for rock, metal, and pun...
Pre and Post Echo's on Trinity Revisited
Pre/post echo is purely a function of the mastering process for the record. In cutting the lacquer, there are many tradeoffs that have to be made, and the quest for longer playing time inevitably leads to less land between adjacent grooves, and he...
B and O Turntables
Kirkus. Btw, I never imagine you own B&O,I'm a huge fan of Bang & Olufsen, and own piles of the stuff . . . actually I own a B&O store. I just don't discuss their current product on Audiogon because I like to participate as an individu...
B and O Turntables
If you're willing to have one repaired/restored, then I'd recommend (US models):Beogram 4002Beogram 4004Beogram 8000Beogram 8002I would consider the TX one step down from these, and the RX two steps down. But they're still good, so if you get one ...
B and O Turntables
I feel that just about all of the B&O 'tables that are generally available in North America, and produced after about the mid-1970s, are equal or better in performance than an entry-level Rega such as the P3 or Planar 3, and yes, I have direct...
Can you lower gain requirements on tube amp?
I have never measured the difference in db's at the speaker between each output level so this is a WAG, but I think the increase from 2 to 3.5v (or 4v) would be at least 9 or more db's. Doubling the voltage is an increase of 6dB.
Center Channel Frequency Response
Actually, the idea of a limited HF frequency range does have some merit specifically for movie soundtracks . . . but it is actually my opinion that VERY few "center-channel" loudspeakers have anything near the required performance anyway, so in mo...
Dvd componet connections
I believe manufacturers were forced to limit 1080p output to HDMI. This is correct regarding Blu-Ray players for the 1080p/24fps native content of a Blu-Ray disc. But this is not a requirement for a DVD player that scales the DVD's 480i native res...
