What are your general thoughts of B&W speakers
I remember Atmasphere making comment about 802 drivers. Midrange is 8 ohm but woofers total is 4 ohm at lower sensitivity expecting amplifier to double power. It won't happen with tube amp. It sounds like it is better suited for SS amp.
What value cap to bypass power supply cap?
I'm not sure why you need to bypass each capacitor. Why not use just one 1uF cap at the PC board entry. M-Cap like that should be most likely around $20.
What value cap to bypass power supply cap?
No, you most likely don't have to worry about ripple. Film caps of equivalent capacitance have much higher self resonance point and much lower ESR than electrolytics.Capacitor that has better frequency response offers low impedance at higher frequ...
What value cap to bypass power supply cap?
Dracule1, I speculate that main reason to add bypass caps is to improve frequency response and to lower the noise. To combat ripples you need to increase main capacitor and/or reduce its ESR.As for self resonance - you want it as high as possible ...
What value cap to bypass power supply cap?
Dracule1, I don't think so. Looks like you got great stuff there. I second 1% minimum recommendation.
Jazz Recommendations
Pat Martino: "Live at Yoshi's" with Joey DeFrancesco and Billy Hart. One of the best Jazz recordings.Charlie Haden & Chris Anderson: "None But The Lonely Hart" - beautiful bass and piano duo just before Anderson's death. Much better than Keith...
What value cap to bypass power supply cap?
Dracule1, Take into consideration that bypassing large inductive electrolytic caps with small non-inductive cap crates parallel resonance circuit that will ring in response to rapid current changes. Designer did not put them for a reason. I would ...
Preamps waste of money?
Dracule1, Hyperions are really sad story. Company had absolutely great innovative product with many awards to practically fold the business down. They had poor dealership base, poor customer support, no marketing etc. I was lucky to still get it. ...
Preamps waste of money?
Brighter sound of SS amps is related to Transient Intermodulation distortion (TIM) caused by negative feedback used to linearize output transistors especially in class AB amplifiers. Product of TIM is overshoot of transitions (in time domain) equi...
Interconnects and shielding and what it does.
Shield has to drain induced current to ground but we don't know the best, least inductive path without trying. In your case it is thru source. When path is less effective shielding becomes less effective. Induced interference affects purity of the...
Preamps waste of money?
Preamp has many functions other than volume control- input selector- balance control (some have tone control)- impedance matching- allows use of balanced cables- breaks ground loops on balanced connections (transformers)- absolute phase inversion-...
DIY Speaker wire
Gauge 10 has resistance of 0.001ohm per foot making 10' typical cable (both ways) 20x0.001= 0.020ohm while at the same time inductor in series with the woofer is likely to have 0.1ohm
Tosslink/Optical
1.5m is better for coax, not Toslink.
When to go solid state vs. vacuum?
This was posted by Atmasphere on 4/19/12 :"Matching amps and speakers is important!Take a look at this link:http://www.atma-sphere.com/Resources/Paradigms_in_Amplifier_Design.phpThe B&W 802 is designed to work on an amplifier that can double i...
Another cheater plug thread
I would think that some return to ground is necessary otherwise system noise would travel from box to box. For instance noise induced in the shield has to find return to ground and it is far better to find direct path instead of currents traveling...
