Is there a SS amp that can offer tube bliss? I have to come to the defense of tubes here. Yes, perhaps tubes cannot reproduce the whole spectrum as accurately as transistors. And, I will even concede that tubes may or may not add harmonics that were not in the original signal.HOWEVER, there ...
Pass Labs X-1 Preamp Questions: Hi again, Lanny,I know we discussed this some outside the forums, but I wanted to add a few points.(1) As far as cabling is concerned, I don't think any amount of cabling is going to change the fact that this is basically a cooler sounding preamp ...
Review: Pass Labs X-1 Preamplifier Bigkidz, I find it hard to believe that the old Counterpoint 5000 would kill the Rogue & the Modulus, that in comparison it made them sound congested & not "real sounding". I do remember that the X-1 had more detail than the Rogue, but the...
Review: Pass Labs X-1 Preamplifier The Pass is a great preamp. However, it ultimately didn't satisfy me in the midrange. I found voices to lack a coherency and life to them. As a vocalist and instrumentalist, I am quite sensitive to the "lining up of harmonics." For example, on my ...
Tube Amp Suggestions Agree with Rogue M150 suggestion. Great amps, used $3000. Cheaper would be older M120s, but self-bias circuit runs them hot. If you like the Aleph sound, I wouldn't recommend ARC sound, but the VT100 Mk II at $2000 is good value.
Old Classic Receivers: A Mistake to Buy? Millions of dollars on R&D to design the receivers of the 70's? Try backing that statement up - no way. I don't doubt that you had a number of receivers without problems, but did you own any of them for 20 years? I had receivers/integrated wit...
Acousti Zen cables... I would not describe the Matrix II as bass heavy in the least. I would call it "full bass". I like this, because it doesn't have the anemic bass, or the thin, threadbare bass of some other cables.
what does "too dark" mean I agree with Red2 and Mechans. They hit it on the head. Closed-in, overdamped, air truncated, ringing or vibration damped down. Not my kind of sound...sort of dead....
Sonic Frontiers Line 2SE vs. SFL2 The SFL-2 is a fairly lean sounding unit for a tube piece. Although the Line series is considered even more lean, I would hardly characterize the SLF-2 as full & tubey. Of course, the Sovtek 6922's have their typical lean and dry sonics, which...
Von Schweikert VR-4jr owners, your thoughts? Mid-bass recessed? I believe Gp1 is the first audiophile to say this. What do the rest of you think? Perhaps the very good depth of the speaker does bring the soundstage back a bit, is what I am gathering. Well, let's just bloat it up a bit with a...
Von Schweikert VR-4jr owners, your thoughts? I was told that the JR had a more distant perspective, whereas the 4SE has a more forward sound. Does anyone know if this is true, because some of the comments I'm reading on this site do not seem to indicate the JR is distant. I personally prefer...
Von Schweikert VR-4,Jr. I have been told that the JR has a more recessed sound than the VR4SE, with voices sounding a bit back. Is this true? It sounds like a tremendous speaker, but I like a midrange with presence, and wonder what the presentation is like.
Power cords for Audioresearch. I had great success with the Acoustic Zen Tsunami on both VT-100 & AR preamps. Dynamic, full, robust, smooth. Better than Synergistic AC Master or Virtual Dynamics Power 3.
Help Me Interim Speakers Suggestions? Thanks for your suggestions. I have heard good things about Harbeths, but I'm looking for something I can find at close to half of retail on Audiogon, so I can later resell it. It doesn't appear I'll be finding such deals on Harbeth, or Tetra or D...
Parasound JC1's vs. Sim Audio W10 Before you start trashing a product, get your facts straight. The "cheap plastic" binding posts on the JC-1's are Superior Electric binding posts, and they are not cheap junk, and were chosen by co-designer Bob Crump as sounding superior over nume... |
